Brisbane Markets wants to show leadership on energy issues

Brisbane Markets has selected Todae Solar to install a 1.06MW rooftop system for what will be Australia’s largest privately owned rooftop system, and one of the top 10 installations in the country.

The 77 hectare site at Rocklea, 10 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, houses the city’s wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower markets and is the workplace for 4000 people.

Chief executive of Brisbane markets, Andrew Young, said construction would begin in early 2015.

“As an organisation, Brisbane Markets Limited has been looking at alternative energy sources to reduce our dependence on grid electricity and our exposure to the massive cost escalations we have seen in recent years,” Young said.

“We believe that solar power will be a key part of the future electricity mix and after a number of feasibility assessments considered that the time was right to move with the installation of a sustainable energy platform.

“Given the current energy landscape, we decided to initiate this pilot project to show our leadership within the local and wider communities.”

The project includes the installation of 3350 Jinko Solar 315w Modules and ABB/PowerOne Inverters.

Todae Solar has installed solar power systems across Australia including Parliament House in Canberra, the University of NSW and Accor Hotels.
