FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The B.C. Coroners Service released a report yesterday regarding intimate partner violence (IPV) deaths in B.C.
The report has found a very alarming number in Northern B.C.
The Northern Health Authority had the highest rate of IPV homicide at 7.1 per million population. This is 2.6 times higher than the provincial IPV rate which sits at 2.7 per million population.
To compare, the Interior Health Authority had a higher rate at 3.7 per million population. Fraser Health Authority was at 2.4, while the Island Health Authority was 2.2 per million population. Vancouver Coastal Health was at 1.6.
There were a total of 3 recommendations that came from the report.
Increase awareness and education to improve understanding of intimate partner violence
Strengthen intimate partner violence safety planning and early collaborative case management
Enhance intimate partner violence data access, quality and collaboration
