The kids just finish their unit on Nancy Ekholm Burkert using my Storybook Artist Curriculum. Elizabeth could not wait to start this unit study since she knew one of the storybooks that we would be using is a version of Snow White! Beck was immediately intrigued by the realistic artwork he found in Mouse and Lion. So, we gathered our magical storybook paint brushes (hypothetically) and set out on our Storybook Artist journey!

Beck and Elizabeth both studied the artwork throughout the storybook Mouse and Lion. I selected a random page in the storybook and asked the children if they were to name that piece of art what would they title it?

This unit added the new word "collage" to our art terms pocket chart. Then I at down with both of the children and we found several example of collage art used in some of their favorite storybooks. I photo copied several pages out of the Mouse and Lion storybook (in black and white) and asked the kids to make a collage of the images on a piece of construction paper. I found this helped to solidify both Beck and Elizabeth's knowledge of the concept of a what a collage is.

As part of this lesson Beck completed his Illustrator Report on Nancy Ekholm Burkert by using this worksheet included in my curriculum:

This unit also expanded the kids artistic skills by completing a fun tissue paper collage project. Prior to the project I had to make this homemade starch glue (the link for the recipe is in this curriculum and I highly recommend making this in the morning before school or perhaps the night before).

Here is Elizabeth and Beck working on their tissue paper collage together:

To end our unit study on Nancy Ekholm Burkert I had the children select their favorite frame of artwork in the Mouse and Lion storybook and recreate it themselves.  Here is what there versions looked like.

I also have to remember to not forget to save all of their artwork throughout the Storybook Artists Curriculum so that I can laminate and bind it all into a keepsake book for them of their Storybook Artist art work!
