Welcome to the Wiki Loves Monuments Pakistan website! This is Saqib, the lead coordinator for Wiki Loves Monuments in Pakistan. Today, I'm excited to have the opportunity to begin a blog on our website to communicate the happenings at Wiki Loves Monuments Pakistan.

After a couple of months of planning, I'm proud to
inform
that Pakistan is ready to participate in the world's largest photography competition — Wiki Loves Monuments — this year for the very first time and has become the 58th country to join in the annual international photography competition. Many people assume at first that this must be a professional job for me, as the lead organiser and I'm into photography but when I explain that I'm doing this voluntarily and I'm not a photographer person, people are often surprised and sometimes greatly impressed. But that's true, Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia, is written and run by volunteers, and Wiki Loves Monuments is primarily organized by volunteers as well. People also thinks that Wiki Loves Monuments is all about photographs but in-fact, there'
re
more to it that makes Wiki Loves Monuments really important. Wiki Loves Monuments is not just about collecting photographs, it is actually aimed at gathering photographs released under a free license so that they can then be freely re-used everywhere by everyone including on
the
Wikipedia. Most photographs you might find on the Internet are copyrighted and thus they cannot be re-used without formal permission of the photographer which is usually not easy to obtain. I know many professionals and many amateur photographers may feel very uncomfortable about releasing their photographs under a free license but believe me its really
worth
to release
a

little
part of your work under a free license. You shouldn't release all of your photos under the free license, only a small part

would work and will
be more than enough. The user of work is (bound) to give credit to original photographer which enables both the photographer and photograph get as much exposure as they can. More people will be able see and appreciate your valuable work.

Other than bringing together people who value their cultural heritage, the competition is also designed to encourage and motivate our people to contribute to Wikipedia who have never contributed to popular encyclopedia and Wiki Loves Monuments is certainly an easier and nicer way to contribute to Wikipedia. Wikipedia aims to offer the sum of all human knowledge to all, at no cost and the cultural heritage is part of that knowledge. On the other hand, Wikipedia is one of the most visited and popular website in Pakistan but it doesn't have much volunteer editors from Pakistan so it is really important that Pakistani people help expand Wikipedia’s base of free knowledge. While it usually take more time and energy to write or expand an article on Wikipedia, it’s pretty simple, fun and easy to take a photograph and upload it.
