North Sydney is a large commercial centre near central Sydney. Located immediately north of the landmark Sydney Harbour Bridge and facing the central city skyline across Sydney Harbour. North Sydney has its own skyscraper skyline on the opposite site of the Harbour Bridge from the city. It is the second largest commercial district in Sydney. Its shops and food halls are at their busiest weekday lunchtimes, and the pubs are packed after work on a Friday and restaurants full on Friday lunchtimes. Although there are a few good restaurants, shops, bars and nightclubs, the area is primarily commercial, with many shops not opening on a Saturday, and just about everything closed on a Sunday. The local and visitor crowd is just as likely to head towards nearby Crows Nest and Military Road on the Lower North Shore

Get in
By train
Trains run frequently from the City to the stations of 'Milsons Point' and 'North Sydney' on the North Shore Line. Town Hall and Wynyard are the best options, and the North Shore trains don't go all around the city circle loop. Trains get busy at peak hours in both directions, especially at Town Hall.

By bus
Many bus routes service North Sydney. Buses depart from Wynyard Station in the City, and stop outside North Sydney Station. The bus can be a little cheaper than the train, but during peak hours can encounter delays in traffic. If your starting point is the City, then train is going to give you a quicker trip.

By car
The area is five minutes drive north of the Sydney over the Harbour Bridge. From the north it is accessible via the Pacific Highway and the Warringah Freeway from the suburb of Chatswood. However, weekday parking is expensive, difficult to find, and time limited in the commercial areas.

By ferry
Ferries operate frequently from Circualar Quay and Darling Harbour to Luna Park Wharf and McMahons Point.

History
North Sydney was settled in the early 1800s, but didn't seriously start to evolve into North Sydney until the Harbour Bridge opened in 1932. The Post Office remains a feature with its clock tower right on the highway. It opened in 1899 as the St Leonards post office, and stands largely unchanged.

The Don Bank History Museum is the oldest surviving building in North Sydney, dating back to 1820. It is open Wednesday afternoons only between 12 and 3PM, and really only for those with a particular interest in the local history or the development of Sydney.

St Thomas Church dates from 1884. Just a small church, and again, only really notable for local interest.

Do
* Entry to the Sydney Luna Park retro amusement park is free. Rides can be paid for individually or with a multi-ride ticket.

* The Olympic Pool nearby has an outdoor 50 meter pool and an indoor 25 meter pool with excellent views of the harbour and bridge.

* A boardwalk connects the marina (descend the steps from the Harbourside Indian restaurant on Lavender Road) to Luna Park then becomes a jogging track all the way to Kirribilli.

Buy
The North Sydney area is notoriously quiet on weekends, and many shops will be closed entirely. However, the area has a number of shopping centres which serve the professional workers in the area, and thus stores stock a great deal of clothing as well as consumer goods.
