Oakland is served by the regional rail system Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and the nationwide, long-distance rail service Amtrak , with the Bay Area's largest Amtrak station located in the neighboring city of Emeryville.

Amtrak has two stations accessible from Oakland, Jack London Square Station (At Alice and 2nd street, not far from the Square itself) and the much larger Emeryville Station (At Horton and 59th Street, in Emeryville). It's always a good idea to get to your train at least 30 minutes early, to allow for lines, security and so forth.

BART is a subway/elevated rapid transit system of the Bay Area. It connects Oakland to San Francisco, the Peninsula, Contra Costa County, and the far northeastern reach of Silicon Valley. There are plans to also extend a BART line to San Jose. Prices on BART vary by the distance you need to travel; a one-way ticket to Oakland is usually $2–4.

Specific AC Transit Transbay bus routes run between San Francisco's Transbay Terminal and different parts of Oakland. Some run as often as every 15 minutes. The Transbay All Nighter (Route 800) serves (San Francisco's) Market Street, the Transbay Terminal, Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond. Additional All Nighter routes link other areas with Oakland, after BART shuts down for the night.

The Emery-Go-Round shuttle connects at MacArthur BART Station, providing frequent and free service from the early morning to around 10 in the evening between Oakland and Emeryville.

Greyhound has a terminal conveniently located in downtown Oakland, on San Pablo Avenue near 20th Street. It's notorious—be careful.

The AC Transit bus system service is a good way to get around if you're headed for downtown Oakland, Jack London Square, the Grand Lake district, or Temescal. Otherwise, depending on where you're going, it can seem like you're waiting for a long time for the bus to arrive. The AC Transit costs $2.10 for adults. Add $0.25 for transfers. BART provides easy access to the Downtown, Fruitvale, and Rockrdge areas, and makes for an easy day-trip from San Francisco. The last return train runs at about 12:15AM.

Bus service to most parts of Oakland and its neighboring cities and towns for $2.10 (one-way, $.25 for single-use transfer), transbay service to San Francisco is $4.20 (one-way, single-use transfer for AC Transit only is free). Service for most routes ends at or around 12am. There are several all-night routes, designated by "8xx" numbers, such as the 800, which runs between Downtown Oakland and San Francisco.

Some neighborhoods are far more car-friendly than others, parking is frequently difficult to find and sometimes costly or time-limited or both. Traffic during weekday rush hours is frequently very heavy to and from San Francisco, as well as the other major freeways.

BART has 8 stops at major areas of visitor interest, which makes it perhaps the best way to experience Oakland. A majority of these stations are adjacent and of walking distance to popular neighborhoods, eliminating car and parking hassles.

Connections between Oakland to San Francisco, the Peninsula, Contra Costa County, and the far northeastern reach of Silicon Valley, usually at a cost between $2 and $4 each way. BART has stations in several major neighborhoods in Oakland itself, such as Downtown (City Center), West Oakland, Lake Merritt and Rockridge.

BART stations are usually named after the neighborhood they are located in. For example, to visit the chic Rockridge neighborhood, exit the Rockridge BART station, conveniently located steps from this area. Same goes for the Fruitvale District (Fruitvale BART station). Lake Merritt BART station is only a block away from the Oakland Museum of CA. Chinatown is 3 blocks from the 12 Street/City Center BART station.

Those hoping to go to the hills of Oakland are probably best off in a car, as bus service to these areas is sparse.
