Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio will star in and produce an adaptation of The Black Hand, a book by Stephan Talty.

Paramount has acquired the rights to the book, and DiCaprio will produce through his Appian Way banner along with The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell. Jennifer Davisson also is producing with Nathaniel Posey.

The Black Hand: The Epic War Between a Brilliant Detective and the Deadliest Secret Society in American History, out in April, is set in New York City in the summer of 1903 when a crime wave hit the city.

The perpetrators left a calling card of the symbol of a black hand. Detective Joseph Petrosino, dubbed the “Italian Sherlock Holmes,” is determined to capture the members of the criminal organization, and his task takes him all the way to Sicily.
