Directed by Denzel Washington, Fences is written by August Wilson, based on his acclaimedTony award winning play of the same name.
The film stars Washington in the lead role, with Viola Davis, Stephen Henderson, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson in supporting roles.
Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, a former black league baseball player, now working as a waste collector, struggles to provide for his family and come to terms with other crucial events of his life.
Wilson has always insisted that the film be directed by an African-American artist, and Washington is certainly qualified for the job.
Both Washington and Viola Davis reprise their roles from the 2010 revival that was produced by Scott Rudin and garnered them Tony Awards.
Playwright-scribe Tony Kushner (Lincoln, Angels in America) polished a draft written by Wilson before his death in 2005. However, Wilson will be the film’s only credited screenwriter.
Williamson, Hornsby, and Henderson also reprise their roles from the 2010 production.
Paramount will release the film on December 25, 2016.
