In our March issue, on shelves now, the beauty team turns to opposites to find the perfect balance between casual and sophisticated. We show you key make-up looks from renaissance rolled hair to liner gone bad – all are about duality to take you from day to night.

Now, we go behind the scenes and ask ELLE’s Maybe Corpaci and Sarah Hoberman a few questions about shoot day.

1. Inspiration behind shoot?

Sarah: The inspiration was really opposites attract. In this story, the model has dual personalities: part edgy and grungy contrasted with a softer, prettier side. For every bad-girl look, for instance deconstructed hair, balance is created with girly make-up. On the other end of the spectrum, beautiful ladylike lips are offset with dishevelled textured hair.

2. Favourite shot?

Sarah: My favourite shot is of Kat wearing the beautiful cat eye. (Excuse the pun!) I love the crisp white detailed shirt and dungarees combo – it makes for such a quirky look. Her make-up is ultra-modern and quite grown-up but has enough edge to keep the look young and fashion forward.

3. Favourite ‘look’?

Sarah: In terms of make-up, the oily smoky eye is my favourite. This update on the classic smoky eye is fresh and on trend, and the wet texture is really easy to achieve. It is also a look that suits everyone.

4. How did you style the shoot?

Maybe: Despite this being a beauty shoot, I directed the styling so as to include separates that would tie in with the issue’s theme – fashion at work. I opted for pieces that matched the beauty looks, for example, a crisp white shirt with embellished collar worn underneath burnt orange dungarees to complement a feminine beehive, or a dark denim shirt and a buttery leather biker jacket worn with dishevelled hair.

5. Models?

Sarah: The models were chosen for their diversity. We always try and find girls with very different features and colourings so that the looks are kept interesting and are shown on a variety of ‘canvases.’ What I saw in the models were:

Ines: the youth and innocence of a modern Lolita

Kat: Soft features, yet so chiselled in the right places – unconventional perfection

Elsa: classical beauty with perfect proportions and the best brows around!

6. Any hiccups on shoot day?

Apart from the usual panic that the Armani coat might be ruined by stray make-up and bankrupt us, all went according to plan!

7. Tips on how to wear:

Tucked-in hair? The trend says it all – be it a polo neck, a scarf or simply underneath your jacket collar, the tucked-in hair trend is easy to reproduce and adaptable to any style.

English rose make-up? This make-up look is highly versatile and doesn’t require a specific pairing to look pretty, although we think it’s best worn with pastels such as minty green and cornflower blue hues teamed with bold accessories to contrast the soft palette.

Smoky eyes? If you’re brave enough to rock the look during the day, play it very simple and offset with light, simple shades and silhouettes.  At night-time, feel free to complement the smoky eye with dark, moody colours and different densities of fabric and texture such as neoprene and lace.

Double-textured hair? This trend is fresh off the runway and works well if worn with an ultra modern look – think clean, structured cuts. Stick to one muted colour palette and avoid prints – they will take attention away from your hair.
