Chesapeake City, Md., Student Charged Over Placing Phony Bomb In High School

A student at Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City, Md., is facing felony charges after a fake bomb was discovered at the school on Tuesday, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal investigators said.
The Cecil Daily reported that the 16-year-old girl is the first one charged in the incident.
“There is an additional arrest expected,” Deputy Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire told the newspaper on Wednesday.
At around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the Chesapeake City Volunteer Fire Company firefighters responded to an alarm at the high school, which was being evacuated.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they found out about a small shipping-style package located in the school’s art classroom.
Cecil County Sheriff’s Office personnel and bomb technicians from the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad were called to conduct further investigation, which determined that the package had been left inside the school as a prank.
“They thought it was a prank,” Alkire said. “I’m sure it was a shock to find that.”
The package consisted of a small box with notes stating that a bomb was inside. The bomb squad assured that there was nothing in the box.
“Apparently they didn’t realize the severity of when you make a statement such as that,” said Kelly Keeton, spokeswoman for the school system.
The teenager has been charged with manufacturing and installing a fake device, which is a felony that carries up to 10 years in jail and a fine of $10,000, according to the Baltimore News Journal. She has also been charged for disturbing school operations, a misdemeanor that comes with a six month prison term and a $2,500 fine. She has been released to her parents.
