You’ve decided that painting the exterior of your house is a good idea and since it’s a big job doing it right the first time is even better. To make that paint job last on your Clearwater home, here are some expert tips.

Start With Clean Surfaces

For exterior house painting the first thing you need to do is to prepare the surfaces to be painted. Painted surfaces should be clean. Power washing off any dirt, mold or mildew is a must. Power washing will also loosen old paint as well. Once the surfaces are dry, then old paint layers should be scraped and sanded. Any loose shingles or moldings should be repaired or replaced. If the stucco is loose, replace it as well.

Prepare And Then Use Primer

Next, prime the house. Primer helps even any stained spots or cover darker, older paint. It also helps the new paint adhere to the house better. Use a hammer and a nail set to tap all nailheads below the surface. That will help give a smoother surface. Be sure to fill the holes with exterior-grade putty, and sand it smooth once it’s dry. Also caulk around windows, doors, and trim, be sure to use a caulk that’s paintable. Then use a tinted primer. This helps you make sure you don’t miss any spots. Tape off edges and trim before you start. This will give clean edges and keep the primer for the walls off of the trim. Then evenly spray the primer.

Don’t Forget Porch And Doors

Do the same for the trim, scrape, sand and prime it. Don’t forget to do the porches, patios and doors as well.

Time To Paint

Once the primer has dried, then you can paint. Use a brush to cut in along edges and trim, narrow surfaces, edges, and smaller areas, and a roller for larger areas. When painting, choose a side to start that is not in direct sunlight. If the surface is hot from the sun, the new paint won’t adhere as well and you will find that it blisters or flakes more quickly. Better yet, paint on an overcast day! Also be sure to start from the top and work your way down.
