What helps you grow stronger? In one word? Stress. Then consequent adaptation. People have this firm belief that all ‘stress’ = Bad. But stress is merely a force acting upon you. Otherwise known as a stimulus. This could be expressed as ‘being outside of your comfort zone’ or dealing with ‘change.’ Ultimately it’s adaptation to stress that determines how we advance as people, the same way a plant generally grows towards the stress of sunshine, or adapts to the chemical makeup of the soil it’s in, or responds to rain.

How people perceive you is not based soley upon looks.

I have a very good friend whom I’ve known for many, many years. He is not a good looking man and while not extraordinarily grotesque looking, you’d never look at him twice if you walked past him on the street. But he’s the funniest guy I’ve ever met. Very friendly, cares about people and one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. Everywhere he goes, he has this instant rapport with people he doesn’t know and can talk about virtually anything. His stories are off-the-wall entertaining and he just has a unique ability to ‘connect’ with people. Never a problem attracting the opposite sex. When we’ve met his very good-looking dates, we’d jokingly ask her, “What are you doing with this ugly bastard?”

When I met him, we were still in college working part time in direct sales. To encourage new recruits, the sales manager would ask them to get up in front of the group at sales meetings and describe why they think they made the sale.

This was his first meeting. He didn’t know a soul there. I asked him as he was standing before the group, “Why do you think you made the sale?” He replied, “Because I’m handsome!”

The entire room was in stitches and that was the start of a friendship that would last a lifetime. The moral of the story is: Don’t be so fixated on the things that you can do nothing about. You’ll make yourself crazy, if you do.

Instead, work towards continually improving yourself, be friendly and kind to people, further developing your self-esteem and personality. It goes a very long way. These things are far more important than outward appearances (which will inevitably fade in time anyway).

Even if most people do care more than they can assume about your looks, not everyone is like that. And even to people who are very influenced by beauty, you  surely have many other qualities that make you a perfectly loveable and valid person, so you should be able to find a significant other, or a career, or, well, live a happy life. The point is highlighting them, and using them to make you confident. Self-esteem is more important than looks to have a plentiful life; I have seen very attractive people ruin their lives for lack of it.

Work on your self-esteem. Work it out, just like a muscle. Find rewards that cement it, be it intellectual or social achievements or whatever, and work hard for them. Society is constantly placing value on beauty, but a sassy, confident, intelligent, self-loving woman will be a better partner, in business or life, than the cutest bimbo.

Musical ability in particular has a way of making people much more attractive than just their facial bone structure or physique would suggest. Ella Fitzgerald was a plain-looking person who became gorgeous by virtue of being, well, Ella Fitzgerald. She was never pretty, but she was certainly beautiful, and she only became more beautiful as she got older.
