Every Friday in 2013, the Let’s Fly Away Across the USA series will feature a different state, documenting the things we love about each sate and what you should do or see when you visit. Want to submit your photos or travel tips? Visit the Across the USA page.

And now, a state I lived in for 8 years. To be honest, it wasn’t my favorite place to live, but a lot of that is because I hate extreme heat and humidity (or, as my friend says, I’m not a toucan/tropical), both of which Louisiana typically has for 5 months out of the year (which were always 5 very long months for me… and my poor friends who had to listen to me). The funny thing about the timing of this post is that by the time you read this, I will have made my first real trip to New Orleans — we’re stopping on our way to Destin. How I managed to live in Louisiana for 8 years with nothing more than a trip to the Port of New Orleans for a cruise, I have no idea. This post makes me nostalgic for Cajun daiquiris and king cake, because, let’s be honest, everyone else can try to make it, but it just isn’t the same. Crawfish, however? Don’t miss those at all. I don’t eat things that look like they’re still living. But if you can find a friend who’s willing to peel one for you, they’re worth trying just to say you did! (P.S. can we talk about how adorable Jessica’s daughter is, even in the middle of a meltdown in front of St. Louis Cathedral?)

Jessica says

My name is Jessica and I blog over at leelafish.com. I currently live in Shreveport, Louisiana and was born and raised in this great southern state.

Jessica loves

I love Louisiana’s food and celebratory spirit! No matter what part of the state you’re in, you’re guaranteed a good meal and a good drink (you can even visit one of the infamous Louisiana daiquiri drive thrus).

Jessica recommends

1. New Orleans. New Orleans as a city is a must. It has its own unique culture, plus amazing music, food, haunted tours, a voodoo museum and even fun activities for kids. Plus, where else can you buy your alcohol out of a street window and keep walking while you enjoy? When you go, make sure you ride the St. Charles street car, fork over the extra money for Arnaud’s famous brunch (complete with a musical quartet to serenade you while you eat), and visit Cafe du Monde for some out of this world beignets.

2. Mardi Gras. Of course with Louisiana, Mardi Gras is a must. And while the parades can be big and wild in New Orleans, you can actually attend them all over the state. In north Louisiana, where I live, there are three big parades you can attend, all of which are family friendly, or have family friendly sections. Plus, in Shreveport we boast a pet parade by the name of Krewe of Barkus and Meoux.

3. Natchitoches. To get a little state history, Natchitoches is a must. On top of being the film location of Steel Magnolias, the city is proud of their Christmas light festival. It also is the home of Northwestern State University, the Cane River, famous meat pies and some gorgeous bed and breakfasts.

For bonus points

One of my favorite things about Louisiana is the wealth of festivals we have throughout the year. In the northern part of the state we have my favorite, Mudbug Madness, where in May you can eat crawfish to your hearts content in every form imaginable. In the fall, we have the Red River Revel Arts Festival, a Shreveport tradition. New Orleans, of course, is the home of Jazz and Voodoo Fest. But perhaps two of my favorite festivals are in smaller Louisiana cities: the Ruston Peach festival and the Farmerville Watermelon festival.

And one last thing, one of my favorite places to have brunch is the Blue Dog Cafe in Lafayette. Not only can you get an amazing dish of Eggs Benedict, but you’re treated to the very famous blue dog art of George Rodrigue while you dine.
