Electronic component manufacturers and distributors are getting ready to converge at Electronica 2014, November 11-14, in Munich, Germany. One of the biggest topics of discussion at the show will be the Internet of Things (IoT) and its huge growth potential for the electronics industry ranging from networked medical devices to smart homes and connected vehicles. The Internet of Things (IoT) device market, alone, is expected to grow from $9.5 billion in 2014 to $46 billion in 2024, according to Yole Développement.
According to the latest research from Gartner Inc., the processing, sensing and communications semiconductor device portion of the IoT will be a rapidly growing segment of the total semiconductor market, growing 36.2 percent in 2015, compared with the overall semiconductor market growth of 5.7 percent. The market research firm also expects “processing” will be the largest revenue contributor to the IoT “things” semiconductor device forecast, at $7.58 billion in 2015, while sensors will see the strongest growth, with 47.5 percent growth in 2015.
Many electronic component manufacturers and distributors exhibiting at the conference plan to showcase and demonstrate their latest innovations for the IoT and the connected world. Other target markets include automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. Here’s a sampling of some of the latest innovations that will be on display at the show. Products range from cables, capacitors, and magnetics to sensors, LED drivers and microcontrollers.
Alpha Wire plans to display its tough Pro-Tekt line of cables, the latest LSZH heat-shrink tubing, and the EcoGen line of wire and cable, including its latest edition – the EcoCable Mini. This 300-V cable is Alpha Wire’s smallest and lightest cable: up to 32 percent smaller and 44 percent lighter than standard 300-V PVC cable.
Atmel Corporation is unveiling a number of new solutions to enable smart, connected and secure devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), including consumer, industrial, automotive and Maker applications. A variety of IoT solutions will be showcased at its booth.
Bosch, which has become a major player in building the Internet of Things and Services (IoTS), also is showcasing its IoT portfolio at Electronica. Bosch Sensortec will demonstrate a broad range of ultra-miniature sensor building blocks for connected living, along with other new applications.
Coilcraft plans to display its RF and power magnetic products as well as other innovative product solutions for markets including the Internet of Things (IoT), wearable products, automotive, data centers, building automation and network power. Some of the products featured include the XAL/XFL families of ultra-small and ultra-efficient power inductors, the LPD5030V Series miniature high-isolation transformer, the LPR6235 Series mini step-up transformer, the 1111SQ Series high-performance square air core inductor, and the SER80xx Series high-current shielded power inductor.
CUI Inc. will demonstrate its fully digital power system based on the Novum Advanced Power modules. The company will also showcase the company’s broad line-up of power products that range from 1~2400 W and include highly efficient medical AC-DC power supplies and rugged, industrial DC-DC converters.
Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced it will demonstrate multiple products and will introduce a new PSoC programmable system-on-chip targeted for the Internet of Things. Cypress will showcase demonstrations of its PSoC and capacitive touch-sensing solutions, USB 3.0 controllers, automotive solutions and memory products. Designers and others interested can register to win a development kit at the Cypress booth.
e2v is announcing the planned launch of its next generation of microwave capable digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The company will offer customers who register their interest early, access to samples, measurement packs and evaluation tools in advance of the official product launch.
FCI plans to launch and exhibit several new products. The company will feature a variety of products including board-to-board, wire-to-board, power solutions, terminal blocks, high-speed backplanes, high-speed I/O and FFCC/FPC. Demonstrations will be conducted throughout the exhibition.
FTDI Chip continues to introduce new semiconductor products with the FT4222H as its latest addition to its USB offering. Compliant with the USB 2.0 hi-speed standard, this is a feature-rich single-chip bridging solution with I2C and multi-channel SPI interface capabilities.
Honeywell will be showcasing a variety of products at the upcoming show. Two new featured products are Honeywell’s Nanopower Series of anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensor ICs, and new additions to the compensated, unamplified Basic Board Mount Pressure Sensors family.
Intersil Corp. will showcase its technology innovations, including several highly differentiated products, such as bridge drivers, radiation hardened ICs, and analog and sensor ICs that will be demonstrated at three distribution partner booths.
IR’s innovative energy-saving technologies and products will be on display. In addition to the latest motor control and automotive solutions, demonstrations of IR’s GaN-based power device platform, GanPowIR will also be highlighted as well as the newest ICs for AC-DC switch mode power supplies (SMPS), CHiL digital controllers and SupIRBuck integrated voltage regulators for DC-DC applications. IR’s benchmark MOSFETs designed for a wide variety of applications will also be featured.
KEMET plans to launch new tantalum capacitor families while also showcasing advanced high-performance ceramic capacitors, including the company’s new X8R and X8L axial ceramics, which are touted as the first of their type with a 150 degrees C capability for automotive and industrial applications.
The Knowles brands – DLI, Novacap, Syfer Technology and Voltronics – are showcasing many of their new products at Electronica 2014. These include DL’s recently released EW series of gain equalizers, Novacap’s extended range of detonator and pulse energy capacitors, and Voltronics’ V9000 Sapphire trimmer capacitor.
Power Integrations plans to unveil a “revolutionary” product for smartphone and tablet chargers, which simplifies design, cuts BOM count, and improves the performance of the chargers for mobile devices. Other products on display include the company’s SCALE IGBT drivers and LYTSwitch family of LED drivers.
Raltron is planning to showcase several new products including a new family of surface-mount OCXO 9 x 14 mm with SC cut crystal oscillators, automotive-grade crystals, and RF ceramic products for Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Bluetooth applications.
Ranoda Technology plans to introduce its new quad band GSM/GPRS antenna that operates at SM/GPRS compatible frequencies of 800/900/1800/1900 MHz.
TDK is highlighting a broad range of electronic components, modules and systems at the show. These include innovative portfolios of TDK and EPCOS such as the new CeraLink capacitors that can be embedded in IGBT modules as DC link and snubber solutions, and CeraPlas, a piezo generator of cold plasma for surface treatment, which is significantly smaller than conventional solutions and is now being shown to a broad industry audience for the first time. Also on display will be the latest TDK wireless power transmission solutions for wearable devices.
TE Connectivity Ltd. announced it is unveiling its highly engineered, cutting edge connectivity and sensor technologies used across several industries, including automotive, industrial and commercial transportation, aerospace and defense, industrial solutions and consumer applications. With its recent acquisition of Measurement Specialties, TE will display and demonstrate its innovative sensor solutions for smart, connected products.
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. also will exhibit its latest industry-leading solutions for a wide variety of applications. The company will demonstrate a range of technologies in several product categories, including capacitors, resistors, inductors, diodes, power ICs, optoelectronics, and power MOSFETs.
Distributors also will be on hand to join their supplier partners in showcasing their latest innovations as well as IoT solutions. Key distributors attending the show include America II, Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Digi-Key, Farnell element14, Future Electronics, Mouser Electronics, Smith & Associates, and TTI. Many are planning product demonstrations and will provide samples to booth visitors.
Some are also holding contests and giving out freebies that you don’t want to miss. For example, Mouser is offering low-cost dev kits to anyone who subscribes to its newsletters and is holding competitions to win high-cost kits from leading suppliers.
Farnell element14 also will be giving away hundreds of development kits from a variety of suppliers including Freescale and NXP. There will also be a Dev Kit Trump card tournament where visitors can play for a chance to win a Robox 3D printer. The first 16 people to show up at the stand at 4 p.m. (CET) on Wednesday 12th November will be entered into the Tournament and will play in rounds until a winner is found.
