As a social media platform, Twitter has since morphed beyond the force of its 140 character limit. Nowhere is this more apposite than in the Nigerian online space where a few “overlords” (like they are now fondly called) determine the scope and focus of discussions on all subjects ranging from politics, the blogosphere, activism, sports, entertainment, religion and ethnicity– with one tweet at a time.

We run the rule on some of the most powerful Nigerian Twitter handles. A clutch of them boast a sphere of influence surpassing those of some mainstream media houses. Here’s a toast to the era of the overlord; presented in no particular order…

1. @Obyezeks: Cerebral, witty and engaging, Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and former World Bank Vice President for Africa, rules her own roost and Twitter community with something resembling an aura. It is a testament to her Twitter influence and persona that most offline advocacy campaigns first gain traction on her handle.

2. @DoubleEph: He’s all shades of smarts. Feyi Fawehinmi fits the profile of a high school lecturer who has mastered the art of deploying Twitter’s 140 character limit to scholarly and disciplinary effect. His timeline often drips of a left leaning political disposition not easy to dismiss with some wave of the hand.

3. @ColinUdoh: Colin’s views on sports (with a bias for soccer) arrive with a cast-iron, almost foolproof seal. Plus, it is not the way he tweets, but how he tweets–not a word out of place and with a short-fuse for anyone who waltzes into his timeline without a spell check on his gadget. He’s the equivalent of a football oracle in Nigeria’s Twitter space.

4.@RealOmoSexy: Nollywood thespian, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, has a follower base exceeding the 500,000 mark; every one of those followers drooling at her every tweet. Her sphere of influence offline has been acknowledged by Time Magazine as well and she often stirs up social causes as well. Brainy and pretty doesn’t even do her enough justice, but we’ll move on….

5. @Omojuwa: Japheth is the Twitter personality/handle you dare not cross swords with. His views on governance and politics are as controversial as there are engaging. These days, he picks his battles carefully; allowing a cast of “voltrons” to decimate his traducers on his behalf. A real force in Nigeria’s online community, this dude.

6. @PastorEAAdeboye: When word first went around that one of the nation’s most powerful clergy had endorsed a presidential running mate, the political party on whose platform this gentleman is running, almost screamed “Halleluyah”. Pastor Adeboye oversees the Redeemed Christian Church of God, tweets sparsely, but when he does, the retweets almost resonate around the Twitter-sphere with the gale of an anointing service.

7. @PastorChrisLive: With 1.4million followers to his name, Nigeria’s jerry-curl-spotting ‘Man of God’ doesn’t even need to tweet. For his adoring followers and fans, just knowing that he is there somewhere on Twitter, is influence enough.

8. @bukolasaraki: One of the nation’s younger politicians and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic, Bukola Saraki engages with his army of followers, wins new converts for his political party (the APC) and lampoons the ills of the ruling party (the PDP). If Twitter were a political party, Bukola Saraki will be its spokesperson.

9. @realFFK: Acerbic offline and online, Femi Fani-Kayode’s timeline is rife with essays and conspiracy theories that can put the best of novelists and sci-fi writers to shame. A politician with the turn-coat speed of a magician, @realFFK takes no prisoners around his Twitter space.

10. @GenevieveNnaji1: Another verified Nollywood actress whose Twitter footprint is a fusion of Instagram as well. If you love Instagram pictures, you’ll love Genevieve Nnnaji’s offerings.

11. @iamdbanj: D Kokomaster is so powerful he can ask all the ‘Kokolets’ and ‘Kokolites’ to frog jump or trek to his raunchy concerts and no one will raise an eyebrow. One of Africa’s most impressive entertainers, D’banj is one of those Twitter personalities we’ve all come to adore.

12. @Ayourb: “The Godfather’s” Twitter timeline isn’t for the faint-hearted. Sometimes, it’s either his way or the highway and it was for his sake that Twitter may have invented the “Block” button. If you are a “Dolt” or “Minion”, be rest assured you’ll be BLOCKED!!!! Plus, his political influence is not even up for debate.

13. @PUREHAIRE: A fantastic Twitter personality who has completely reinvented Twitter interactions with a mix of Igbo, colloquialism and legalese. In recent times, Nana Nwachukwu has dumped “Royal hipness and Sexy Twitter” for “Political Campaign Twitter” and {like} with everything Nana, it’s been a seamless transition.

14. @ToyinIbitoye: Another master of Nigeria’s sporting circuit, Mr. Ibitoye’s Twitter handle is a refreshing addition to the online space. For Nigerian football news in real time, a foray into the underbelly of the various sporting associations in the land, here is one handle you’ll sure love.

15. @Akaebube: Only a handful of chaps can attest to his existence in real life, but “our attention has been drawn to the fact that” he’s no catfish. Ebube is a card carrying member of the PDP who goes to bed with APGA in the East in what he’s called a “sabbatical defection”. And it’s all good, just because it’s Ebube. One of the President’s ventriloquists you’ll hate to love or love to hate.

16. @360nobs: An entertainment and lifestyle Twitter handle that relays the news in a magazine format in 360 degree style. A safe bet for Nigerians who yearn for a break from the drama of “Political Twitter”.

17. @Chydee: If you love a good laugh now and again and yearn for some wisecracks, Chidi has got you covered. He blogs as well, but he strikes one as a better comedian. Chidi recently outlined how to avoid the ubiquitous traffic gridlock in Lagos. Some of his suggestions were striking: (a)Be a Governor (b)Buy a helicopter (c)Drive around 11pm to 4am (d)Become a witch (e)Don’t come to Lagos. Only Chidi can drop lines like this and still get away with it. The cited tweet has been retweeted hundreds of times.

18. @Nedunaija: Brawn, brain and base instinct, Chinedu Ekeke has got them all in spades. He’s the “Red Cap chief” from Abia State who loves to remind everyone just what it means to be a red cap chief; because that means eating pounded yam and hating Indomie. When he’s not dissing President Jonathan and the PDP, he’s stroking his left palm on his Ipad in a corner of Lagos, blogging and running a thriving media firm. A red cap Twitter influencer no doubt.

19. @stanleyazuakola: Another brainy blogger with a popular policy and political blog to boot. Stanley cut his tweet as a journo and has brought that to bear on “The Scoopng”. An amiable fellow you’ll certainly fall for offline and online.

20. @Wizkidayo: Wiz Kid is so influential he can diss Davido on his timeline and make that trend. With 1.4million Twitter followers (most of them female fans) asking for more, it’s easy to see why every Wiz Kid song gets to drop on his social media pages first. Plus, he gets away with sagging in our faces just because he can.

21. @FailedRift: It is still unclear who invented the “Troll Cabal”–a Twitter group with the sole mandate to disperse subliminals around the place–but Ikenna’s imprimatur on the inner workings of the cabal, needs retelling. He’s also a Co-convener of the “Yardists”; a community of creative twitter personalities who mimic life in the slums and suburbs of Nigeria. A cerebral Geology lecturer in one of the nation’s foremost Universities, @Failedrift is a Tweep who flaunts his rock discoveries in our faces with exotic abandon.

22. @amasonic: Mark Amaza moderates the popular Twitter relationship and lifestyle interactive session called “No-Holds Barred Interactive (NHBi)”. A decent writer with several blog posts to show, Amaza also possesses political views of his own that grates and endears in equal fashion.

23. @Donjazzy: It will be difficult to find a Nigerian celebrity who has mastered the adept use of Twitter better. Michael Collins (Don Jazzy) of the Mavin Records fame can sell just about any name on Twitter and make it sound cool the next minute. It was from his Twitter space we first heard of ‘Dorobucci’ and ‘Eminado’. And while we were wondering what Jazzy’s coinages all meant, he defined them his own way and made hits out of them as well. He’ll be back with more coinages in the days ahead and we’ll lap them all up with barely concealed glee. Says a lot about his Twitter influence.

24. @atiku: One of Nigeria’s smartest politicians who didn’t just make Twitter look cool in the run-up to the political party primaries, he made Twitter seem like a good space for policy and ideology discourses. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar arrived Twitter despised and rejected no thanks to a past reputation in official circles hurtling before him. It took him a few days to get verified thereafter and he’s bagged over 200,000 followers as well. He’ll be back in 2019 to charm us all again and he knows resistance will be futile.

25. @AfroVII: Tola Sarumi always comes across as the tomboy who still manages to pack a sex appeal and plenty of brains in a lithe frame. And maybe all this is down to the fact that we really can’t put a finger on what she looks like, yet. She writes beautifully and is passionate about country. Every tweet of hers is influential. You heard it here….last!!

26. @rosanwo: He’s engaging, sarcastic, witty and cerebral and all because you aren’t a member of the “Canary” until you are engaging, sarcastic, witty and cerebral. Babatunde Rosanwo packs a punch and a half in every Tweet and he has zero tolerance for the pillaging that goes on in the corridors of political power in Nigeria.

27. @TiwaSavage: An amazing singer with plenty of sex appeal offline. She leverages Twitter to reach and interact with her burgeoning fan base daily. Tiwa also comes across as having a good, wise head on those shoulders.

28. @Tontolet: It wouldn’t be a Nigerian social media list if Tonto Dikeh isn’t on it. She uses her Twitter handle to propagate the virtues and ideals of the Tonto Dikeh Foundation. She’s “Poko” through and through on Twitter.

29. @AtomLim: A Twitter persona who has completely reinvented the fine art of sarcasm through his tweets. Atom, like most of his twitter peers, is intelligent and witty–a fine specimen of the next generation of Nigerian leaders. And he lets his presence felt, one tweet at a time.

30. @ToluOgunlesi: A young generation Nigerian writer in a world of his own. Tolu has bagged awards all over the place for his writing and journalistic mileages and he has thousands of young Nigerians taking his every tweet as some gospel.

31. @elrufai: The self-styled certified ruffler of feathers who is perpetually under the skin of the ruling PDP. He’s had brushes with almost about everyone on the far Right of Nigeria’s social media political space and he’s emerged unscathed from every one of them. For his efforts, his name will be on the ballot paper when Kaduna State votes to elect a new Governor in February.

32. @4eyedMonk: Henry Okelue shows a passion for his country with every tweet. He rails at the political class with every opportunity, fact checks every tweet from the opposing political camp and elevates political discourses in his own little corner of the online Twitter community.

33. @renoomokri: Also known as Mr. Wendell Simlin these days no thanks to a propaganda attempt that went awry from the off, Reno Omokri is President Jonathan’s Special Assistant on New Media whose job demands that he tweets about the President’s locomotives, newly laid roads and everything that looks transformed from what it once was. He writes effusively as well and has to put up with thousands of trolls and ‘haters’ daily who question the veracity of his claims.

34. @Karibiba: A sarcastic and witty Twitter user whose passion ranges from football, law, celebrity gossip, love for President Jonathan and politics. Biba’s tweet style is mined from a different era–an eclectic mix of humor and straight talking to drive home a point.

35. @Avariberry: Dami Elebe is an on-air personality who brings that presence to bear on her Twitter handle as well. Her tweets drip with doses of sarcasm, bants and panache. She rails against the inefficiency in the Nigerian system as well, all day long.

36. @Dupekilla: Many persons’ favorite Twitter handle. Dupe is street and book smart and raises awareness online for offline advocacy campaigns. It is the mix of banter and perspicacity which is the trademark of this handle that endears and reverberates.

37. @abati1990: President Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media who first made his mark as a renowned Newspaper columnist. Some of his followers often rail that he’s a different proposition these days but his influence remains.

38. @Oddy4real: A young lawyer set in his own ways. Ayokunle Odekunle gives as good as he gets and nary a day passes without him being attacked for his controversial views. When he’s not splitting hairs on social media, he’s the OP-ED editor of Ynaija and also divides his time taking on court cases at his reputable law firm.

39. @KwamiAdadevoh: Uncle Kwami is Twitter’s Mr. nice guy who allows the gloves loosen up a bit when driven mad. He likes to keep his cool, educating and schooling the eccentric young cast around him. His cult following isn’t up for debate as well.

40. @Gidi_Traffic: Nigeria’s most socially responsible Twitter handle by a mile. The traffic navigator on our timelines. Here, real time traffic situations in bedlam ridden Lagos are often relayed and analysed by hordes of users. @Gidi_Traffic also retweets all kinds of societal problems from users who want answers to nagging questions. When tech savvy road users want to find out which routes to avoid during drive time, they head straight to @Gidi_Traffic.

41. @ThisIsBuhari: The APC Presidential candidate for next month’s contest is a Twitter newbie, but he arrived with a storm: he was barely two days old on Twitter when he racked up as much as 43,000 followers and took his first selfie. At the time of filing this, General Muhammadu Buhari’s Twitter follower count is over the 60,000 mark. That clout and influence permeates our timelines whenever he tweets these days; which is pretty often.

42. @Yadomah: She was the youngest delegate at the National Conference in Abuja which rounded off last spring. To follow her on Twitter is to learn and relearn. For someone her age, not a few are left in awe of her approach to issues.

43. @gbengasesan: An IT guru with plenty of international exposure to boot. He heads the Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN). Only Gbenga could possibly look General Buhari (retd) in the eye and tell him: “we’ll marshal all our resources to vote for you, but if you disappoint us, we’ll vote you out,” and still manage to get away with it.

44. @Seunfakze: Seun isn’t one for niceties when Nigeria is the subject of discourse. He hates that Nigeria is playing in the lower reaches of the developmental league when it should be up there. Another young person leaving his mark on the trail.

45. @Ogundamisi: “I am unapologetically partisan”, Kayode Ogundamisi says in his bio and he lives up to that partisan reputation daily. A former secretary of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Ogundamisi has a Twitter influence that never wanes; in and out of season.

46. @eggheader: And he really is an egghead. Mr. Odewale’s Twitter page is a crucible of some sort for knowledge dissemination, political analyses and smart thinking. He’s also a hands-on person on every Nigerian subject.

47. @emma_dele: The football pundit with a bias for Arsenal, Emmanuel Nwachukwu is interactive, friendly and accessible. His top notch business acumen also sees him overseeing the customer service department of a gadget firm, adroitly. His Twitter influence is far-reaching on match days and his pot-pourri of wisecracks and memes, a sheer delight. He’s “top, top” quality.

48. @DOlusegun: Perhaps nothing will please Segun Dada more than a Buhari Presidency in the coming months. He’s been a dyed-in-the-wool “Buharist” for as long as anyone can remember and wears his APC membership on Twitter like a second skin. He’ll go to the ends of the earth to make sure the APC sweeps the entire country when next elections are here….only if he could manage it.

49. @IamOkocha: Austin Jay Jay Okocha still holds the honor of Nigeria’s most naturally gifted footballer of his generation. He’s hung up his boots now and doubles as a pundit when he’s not making money from endorsement deals. He’s a respected football voice online.

50. @Temiokomi: No one else tweets like Temisan and that’s because no one else can be Temisan. He’s a sports broadcaster but his activist leaning boils to the surface every so often. It’s all he can do to remain sane in a country unable to find its feet. He’s a Twitter user who leaves his followers with rib-cracking jokes and pick-up lines. And when you cross his path, he reminds you of just how much of an “infidel” you are.

51. @Iceprincezamani: Ice Prince Zamani has a good head on his shoulders in spite of all the fame music has brought him. His Twitter footprint suggests a young man who’ll rather avoid the limelight when he isn’t dropping bars in the studio.

52. @Aninoritse: Anino has sobered a bit since the days when she’ll go gaga about everything from relationships to governance in Nigeria. Maybe it’s the horrible London weather, Arsenal’s enduring disappointment on the pitch, the London trains or all three. But she retains a powerful voice in Nigeria’s online circuit.

53. @blossomnnodim: Blossom has lived up to her name in the intervening years as her Twitter clout has risen. She’s a social media marketer and political influencer online. She’s also grown milder as well but never shies away from getting under the skin of persons who share a different political persuasion.

54. @RadicalYouthMan: He started off on Twitter as a President Jonathan antagonist but has grown to love the President so much; he’s got the President’s image forever emblazoned on his heart and on his avatar. It was a transformation like no other and one his army of followers have come to live with. He’s an online political influencer of no mean repute.

55. @ChibuikeAmaechi: The Rivers State Governor has found in Twitter a new home. He tweets a lot these days and he’ll be in our faces a lot more as well as he manages the Buhari campaign. One man the Presidency will probably never be at ease with.

59. @Ikwerreman: China Acheru is a football blogger and a radio broadcaster of the finest hue. He’s at home while discussing the Super Eagles and Dolphins FC.

60. @EldeeTheDon: A gifted Nigerian lyricist and rapper, Eldee has now taken to social advocacy issues on his timeline. His Tweets often dwell on arousing the consciousness of young Nigerians to the power they wield as a bloc. No mean campaign.

61. @ik_osakioduwa: Radio personality, Big Brother Africa host and compere, Ik is a warm personality offline as well as online. With close to 150,000 followers to his name, Ik’s words are most of the time viewed as law. He’s got bags of aura as well.

62. @DeleMomodu: Bob Dee has forged an enduring relationship between his Twitter community and his Newspaper Column; “Pendulum”. Pendulum is reproduced across several blogs as soon as it hits the cyberspace and Dele Momodu’s style of engaging and Retweeting endorsements and comments from readers of his column is something to admire. A two-way Twitter conversation has taken the Ovation Publisher to Twitter stardom.

63.@nnamdianekwe: A security expert and a seasoned banker, Nnamdi Anekwe-Chive arrived Twitter almost fully made. His security tips and analyses are often top drawer stuff. Make your move, DSS.

64.@MrAyeDee: It is not very often that a Twitter user rises to fame on the platform on the back of a lady and some scandal, but Mukhtar Daniyan has got his game tight since a controversial face-off with popular blogger, Linda Ikeji, saw him gain thousands of followers before you could say “Numbered tweets”. A controversial Twitter user, @MrAyeDee was all about “Intelligence” and “Security Info” as the nation wages a bloody war with Boko Haram insurgents. These days, he goes hard on anyone of Buhari and APC persuasion. Some transformation….and influence.

65. @iamtenseven: Emeka has the PDP DNA embedded in his genes and he flaunts it like probably no one else has ever done in the social media space. Age has calmed him down a bit, it appears, and he’s abandoned a confrontational style for the banter-filled and sarcastic. An influential PDP Twitter handle.

67: @LindaIkeji: They may not admit it, but when bloggers meet in their covens after hours, they all discuss how to be like Ms. Ikeji. Her eponymous blog has become something of a generic name for the otherwise thankless profession. A trail blazer whose gossip and twaddle induced style rakes in plenty of cash and is still difficult to beat. Class.

68. @Cchukudebelu: Onye Nkuzi (the Teacher) is a Twitter user with some cult following. He is of the philosophical, ideological bent with an analytical mind that can at once leave you dizzy. He’s Nigeria’s Twitter teacher who appears in our faces clutching a chalk and dressed in jump-up trousers with a long tie and a goatee. Exactly why we rush to his TL to see what he’s been up to. And when he throws tantrums by closing his Twitter account like he often does, we are forever beseeching him by the door of the classroom, asking him to make a return.

69. @Bint_Moshood: An APC stalwart with some boxing gloves and a cup of coffee. Oh, and she’s one helluva feminist! Our sexy feminist with a sonorous voice.

70. @Chxta: Cheta Nwanze is ‘Onye Nkuzi’ without the boxing gloves on. He loves to teach as well and has the #HistoryClass hashtag to his many credits and milestones. A fine writer and deep thinker, Cheta knows a thing or two about working the crowd. He’s as intelligent as they come.

71. @Elnathan: A fine writer whose tweets are worth their weight in gold. To underline his influence, Elnathan recently unfollowed everyone he’s ever followed on Twitter. Only “overlords” can pull that off.

72. @FelaDurotoye: A motivational speaker with massive influence. In a country as depressing as ours, a little sweet talking here and there is bound to make you very influential. And Durotoye’s influential across Radio, Television and the altar.

73. @iam_Davido: He was born to throw shades and subs, that’s if he isn’t singing. Someday, we’ll sit Davido down and ask him why he loves subbing so much. For the music loving young and young at heart, he’s simply untouchable.

74. @2faceidibia: A gifted artiste whose love for the streets often spills into the cyberspace. When 2baba tweets, we often listen.

75. @AyoSogunro: Everything in Nigeria is going to make this dude a superstar someday. A lawyer during the day, a profound writer/blogger at night and a brain that oozes solutions in between, Ayo Sogunro is everyone’s idea of a passionate Nigerian. A fine gentleman as well who loves his Star Lager murderously cold.

76. @OgbeniDipo: You don’t want Dipo on your case, especially around noon Nigerian time or just before dinner time. Enough said.

77. @UcheBriggs: Soundbites. Check. Wise-cracks. Check. Intelligence way above his age. Check. Brand Ideas. Check. A wise head on young shoulders. Check. Uche Briggs is always welcome on our timelines, because even when he yabs us, we never realize it was a yab until he’s logged out.

78. @MrFixNigeria: Twitter Nigeria’s pound-for-pound impresario and PDP henchman–for the online community, that is. His Twitter ID is no mistake. Ohimai Godwin Amaize loves a fight and it wouldn’t be “political Twitter” if he isn’t dishing out blows and dodging same; all in a bid to fix Nigeria. When he’s not fighting, we get bored, ask why and log out. He packs plenty of influence in those punches as well.

79. @Ediffied: The wordsmith extraordinaire; Edy is so adept at pun and the word game, she’s got us all hooked just in case she drops one while we are out driving. An engaging Twitter user as well.

80. @MrEnclave: His Bar is the Twitter equivalent of “Ziggy’s Bar” in the popular soap, Tinsel. He provides a warm ambiance for Nigeria’s Twitter community to meet, discuss the future and the country, network and watch football.

81. @SheCrownLita: Blessed with Dangote’s business acumen and Fola Adeola’s managerial ability all in one petite frame, @SheCrwonLita is Twitter Nigeria’s sweetheart. Dogged, passionate about country and loving.

82. @GbengaGold: Gbenga wears his Twitter persona on his sleeves. He matches online activism with off-line political awareness campaigns. If the battle has to be fought on the streets; away from the comfort of sleek gadgets, be sure to find Gbenga on the front-lines. Exactly why his political party, the APC, regards him as such an invaluable asset.

83. @BudgITng: Nigeria’s budget and policy hub with the panache of youth. @BudgITng analyses the take-aways from all the fiscal figures and provides the unseen gist behind the numbers. A number-crunching one stop shop for all Nigerians online.

84. @channelstv: If it’s a Nigerian video skit that has gone viral, chances are that ‘Channels TV’ uploaded it on YouTube first. From ‘Oga at the top’ to ‘Diaris God’ and Patrick Obahiagbon’s ‘Crinkum Crankum’ moments, @channelsTV tweets the link, sits back and watches us all go into fits of laughter.

85. @mobilepunch: The news as it breaks–simple, concise and reader-friendly. With a horde of correspondents across the nation and a Twitter presence that has only gotten better, The Punch has set its stall for such a time when Newspapers become obsolete.

86. @PremiumTimesng: Nigeria’s online investigative powers got a shot in the arm not so long ago, and Premium Times was there as it all unraveled. A fearless news reportage and magazine outfit, @PremiumTimesng has kept us all abreast of the news behind the news.

87. @SaharaReporters: A whistle blowing news portal in the land like no other. Fiery, alarmist, fearless and with a hint of propaganda here and there, Sahara Reporters perches in a nondescript apartment in New York and watches the Nigerian Seat of power run amok from the fire it has lit. Its Twitter handle tells the story of how much we all love Sahara Reporters. Even closet fans refresh the page now and again to see if the empire is still standing.

88. @DrDamages: A columnist with Sahara Reporters, Rudolph Okonkwo fits the profile of “a mind gone berserk”. His tweets are a long line of satire that keeps you reeling in laughter long after you’ve logged out for the day. A class act any day.

92. @NotGoodluck: Whoever runs this parody account deserves a place in Aso Rock–if for nothing else, for his/her ability to convey the messages President Jonathan will not like to convey in a way President Jonathan will not like to convey. Forever amusing, @NotGoodluck is Nigeria’s best parody account by some distance.

93. @UtomiPat: A cerebral politician and businessman with a wealth of experience and nous. 100.@abikedabiri: A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, when Abike Dabiri tweets, we suspend all else (including football) and read. When she doesn’t tweet, we groan in protest. We are jobless like that.
