Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated in India as Lord Ganesha’s birthday ceremony by the Hindus. According to Hindu Mythology: lord Ganesha is considered as the eldest son of Lord Shiva and divinity Parvathi. This festival is also called as Vinayak Chaturthi. This festival is celebrated with great energy and passion especially in western India, particularly in Maharashtra. Here the celebration goes for ten days and the idol of Ganesha is kept for all these days even by common natives of Maharashtra. Worshiping of Lord Ganesha was first started by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and this was conducted as a non-community event.

Let’s catch up with its History:

The beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Maharashtra was traced back to Shivaji Maharaj. It was he who first started the festival to encourage patriotic feelings and support cultural synchronization. Since 1882, the festival received a fresh breath, when the freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak invigorated it, as a perfect stage to spread the significance of freedom fight and thus resisted the Britishers who had forbidden all public assemblies. Natives from all communities participated in it and the festival altered into a religious as well as communal function, thus playing a very important role in unifying the Indians and vitalizing the spirit of togetherness.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped every day in a Hindu family and this is done as a subject of routine and dedication. The celebration of Ganesha Chturthi is regarded as a community occasion and was restarted by the famous leader Lokmanya Tilak, a freedom fighter, who made use of this as a means to spread the significance and gather communal support uniting all Hindus. Falling in the months of August and September, this is one of the most special festivals which Mumbaites rejoice with grand zeal and passion. Lord Ganesh is considered as the patron saint of Maharashtra and over 7000 idols are specially made in Mumbai every year. This alone is sufficient to explain the passion of Mumbai in celebrating the festival. Despite the fact that Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Pune, Orissa and Karnataka, Mumbai is the most renowned for its enormous processions.

Even the households in Mumbai rejoice the festival by getting the idol of Lord Ganesha and worshipping it for ten days. The houses are completely cleaned and the idol is brought in with the relatives; chanting religious verses. The five to ten days long festival ends with the ‘Ganesh Visarjan’ where the idols of Ganesha are immersed in the water; it is done as a parade with millions of people associated with the idol along with loud music and dance.

We wish you a very happy Ganesh festival 2015!
