Sony has dropped its appeal over the £250,000 fine that was handed to the company by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) following the PlayStation Network hack in 2011 which affected around 77 million accounts.
The ICO handed the fine to Sony in January stating that the attack was preventable and there was ”no disguising that Sony is a business that should have known better.” A Sony spokesperson told V3:
“After careful consideration we are withdrawing our appeal. This decision reflects our commitment to protect the confidentiality of our network security from disclosures in the course of the proceeding. We continue to disagree with the decision on the merits.”
The ICO added, ”We welcome Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited’s decision not to appeal our penalty notice following a serious breach of the Data Protection Act.”
