This week, console gaming enters a brave new world with the launch of PlayStation VR, an add-on for the PS4 that allows virtual reality gaming. With two PC-based competitors, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, already on the market, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for since science fiction first imagined the technology decades ago. This week, PS4 gamers can step into virtual worlds to put on Batman’s cowl, pull of a heist as part of London’s criminal underworld, and race from the driver’s seat of high end sports cars—and that’s just the beginning.

EGM’s top picks for this week:
PlayStation VR (October 13th)
Available for: PlayStation 4
Why we’re excited: The PlayStation VR is the first virtual reality headset that works on a console, which means it’s the more affordable and accessible way for VR newcomers to get started. The early buzz: The EGM Crew has been going hands-on with the PSVR for more than a week already, and while the games on offer are certainly hit or miss, there’s a ton of exciting potential here—as well as some early standout experiences. Check back later in the week for our full rundown of all the games, but for now we recommend Tumble VR if you’re into puzzle games and Job Simulator if you’re into silly fun. Size matters: If you’re picking up a PlayStation VR, be aware that most of the VR-exclusive titles are much shorter than standard games. They’re also much cheaper, however, so you won’t need to break the bank to pick up a few extra games at launch.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration (October 11th)

Why we’re excited: Lara Croft’s latest adventure is finally coming to PS4, and bringing new content for other platforms, too, in the form of the Blood Ties DLC. The early buzz: When our Mollie L. Patterson went hands-on with Blood Ties, she found a surprisingly different Tomb Raider experience, one that was less action packed and more akin to Gone Home. Buried treasure: EGM alum Spencer Campbell gave the Xbox One version of the game an 8.0 when it launched last year, calling it “a blast to slip into Lara’s shoes once more.”

Why we’re excited: Expanded arenas mean now your most contested bouts can spill out into the audience or even backstage area, just like what you see in real life when you watch Monday Night RAW or a PPV. The early buzz: New match dynamics like the revamped Ladder Match mini-game help create a more authentic in-ring flow and provide the most dynamic product yet from the series. Become one with the Universe: The revamped WWE Universe mode now features more programs and mid-show promos, along with all the customization aspects you’ve come to know and love from the past.
