Rumors that a new entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games would be announced during Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2016 keynote proved correct—but the title isn’t the rumored Marvel vs. Capcom 4.
Instead, the game will be known as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and it’ll be arriving in 2017. The first trailer, which you can check out below, introduced four the fighters, two from each side. On the Marvel side, we saw Iron Man and Captain Marvel, while the Capcom fighters were Street Fighter‘s Ryu and Mega Man.
A post on the PlayStation Blog reveal more info about the gameplay and features of MvC: Infinite, including a intriguing mechanic centered around Marvel’s Infinity Stones. Here’s the official blurb on that:
“Pulled from classic Marvel lore, unique and game-changing Infinity Stones can be implemented into players’ strategies as a way to influence the outcome of battle. Each Infinity Stone provides a unique advantage to the player and represents a different aspect of the universe: power, space, time, reality, soul, and mind.”
Sure, Ryu can punch hard, but now he can punch your soul.
Something else to note about the PS Blog Post: It lists the confirmed Marvel characters as “Iron Man and Captain America,” which may be a typo, given that it’s another, entirely different Captain in the trailer. Then again, even if it’s a premature reveal, the stature of Captain America in the comics, movies, and previous MvC games make it seem inevitable that Steve Rogers will be back in Infinite.
Despite its PlayStation-centric reveal, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be available for multiple platforms—PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC—when it launches next year.
There is, however, one thing that’s PS4-exclusive about this announcement: A port of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is available today on PlayStation 4. The YouTube trailer description reveals it’s coming to Xbox One and PC a few months down the road, in March of 2017.
