Advertorial

Staying in busy Singapore, it is always good to get the family to enjoy the outdoors, and just enjoy each other’s company. I think that there is no better way to do that, than by going out for a day at sea together. Truly, the sun, the sea and the sand, really helps one to relax, and gets one to savour the “Moments” with the family!

And just last week…we did just that! A fun relaxing time at Seletar Country Club. If you want Work Life Balance, this is it!

Seletar Country Club sits beside the beautiful and serene Lower Seletar Reservoir. It offers the challenge of a highly rated 18-hole golf course with natural terrain and beautiful scenic views.

Being City Dwellers, Parents today are always looking to give our kids a more Outdoor experience! Just something out of the norm! If you are looking for that something extra, Seletar Country Club offers Water Sports which will whet the appetite of any Sports enthusiast.  The Seletar Country Club Sailing Centre is not just the home to the Seletar Country Club’s water sports enthusiasts, it is also widely used by the Sea Scouts and school students. We had the privilege of bringing our kids to enjoy a Kayaking and Sailing Expedition.

The children have never done anything at sea before…and technically…they still haven’t! This is because the water sports activities at Seletar Country Club are conducted in a Reservoir, and therefore is much safer than open waters. Here, you won’t need to contend with strong winds or waves, and the waters are very safe for beginners.

Sounds exciting right!

Before entering the waters, we were also given a safety briefing by our instructor, and we had our kayak paddles adjusted to a left hand grip, so that many of the “lefties” will find it easier to kayak.

After getting our muscles loosened up, we were off!

The kids were so excited, as we trekked down the short 25m down to the waters. Check out their smiles, and their willing hands to help us carry the kayaks down to the waters.

And before we got into our Kayaks, this was our final demonstration. Our instructor showed us how to get in, paddle forwards and backwards. Surprisingly, my wife who was not used to water sports was looking forward to it, as she found the waters very calm. With that sense of adventure in our hearts, we stepped in, to conquer new grounds!

The Kayaks we used were 2-seaters, and they could take 2 passengers in 1 Kayak. My kids who are 8, 6 and 5 years old all had an Older buddy, to help them as we stepped out for our water adventure. Nadine who was the youngest, sat in between Daddy and Mummy, as we paddled out to deeper waters.

The kids definitely enjoyed their first adventures on their kayaks, as the instructor kept our interest burning. There were various water exercises he made us perform, in order to help us get used to our surroundings. The kids were exposed to the natural Seletar habitat, and wildlife that we don’t normally see in the city. Truly an eye opener for us City Folks!

For families who want to fine tune or just expose themselves even more to Kayaking, Seletar Country Club offers the same facilities at the Swimming Pool. Visitors and Members can sign up for lessons with Seletar Country Club at yihui@seletarclub.com.sg or call Yi Hui at 9438 4374 for more enquiries. For the Sports enthusiasts, you will also find other facilities such as a gym, bowling lanes and Pool tables there as well.

The kids had great fun exploring the club and checking out the food as well. As the Seletar Terrace offers food ranging from Oriental to Western, lunch time can be quite a crowded affair, as many of the engineers and executives from the Seletar Aerospace Park come over for lunch as well.

The kids had the kids meal, which comprised of spaghetti, milo and ice-cream, while Nathan had his favourite Beef Hor Fun. Daddy was happy to wolf down his Chicken Wings!

Next up was sailing!

Personally, I don’t have much experience with Sailing, so I was glad to find out that our instructors were patient and ever willing to impart to us. In fact, both of them were ex-national sailors, and they therefore had tons of experience under their belt.

We were there to witness our instructors “Rigging” the boat, and after some simple instructions. we were off!

Sailing is now a sport in many Primary Schools, and it can be picked up by kids as a CCA.

Initially, our first experience of taking the ropes, and learning to control and move around the boat was daunting, but after a while, we enjoyed our ride. It was no wonder, that many people love the sport, as there is just something “calming” about being out at sea. Our instructor educated us about the use of the sails, and how sailing builds confidence in kids. As decisions needed to be made swiftly and decisively, when one is out at sea, kids will learn the skill of “Thinking on their feet” and effective problem solving skills. He also remarked that sailing was a great way to enjoy nature and to slowly sip your beer and wine at the same time!

It was truly an awesome experience, and we are definitely very “open” to have the kids pick up the sport one day. In fact, we realized that there is so much to learn in sailing, that you just have to sign up for a course, and “clock up” some hours at sea, to really learn the sport.
