The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has appointed a new pro vice-chancellor known as Rev. Prof. Charles Ansah.
The announcement was contained in a letter dated October 07, 2016 signed by the Acting Registrar, Ben O. Andoh which reads: “It is announced for the information of all members of staff, students and the entire University Community the Council of the University, at its 241st (Regular) Meeting held on Friday, October 07, 2016, appointed REV. PROFESSOR CHARLES ANSAH as PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR for a Two Year Term with effect from OCTOBER 01 2016- SEPTEMBER 30, 2018.”
He takes over from Professor Samuel Nii Odai, the Former Pro Vice-Chancellor. Until his appointment, Rev. Professor Charles Ansah was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Rev. Professor Charles Ansah is an alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah university of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He graduated with a B.Pharm in 1987. Following his two-year national service at the Faculty of Pharmacy in the same university, he was appointed a Teaching and Research Assistant in 1990.
In 1993, he won an award from the British Council to study pharmacology and toxicology at the then Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London (now part of Imperial College London). He graduated successfully with MSc. Pharmacology & Toxicology in 1994. He was appointed lecturer in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy and the School of Medical Sciences in the same university in 1995.
He returned to Imperial College London on a Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a PhD in 2000, which he successfully completed in 2004 with PhD (Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology) and DIC (Diploma of Imperial College). Professor Ansah returned to the university in 2004.

Professor Ansah leads the toxicology research group in the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. His research interest is in the molecular mechanisms underpinning the hepatoprotective/hepatotoxic actions of local medicinal plants. He also has special interest in the safety assessment of herbal remedies. He has successfully supervised a number of MPhil and PhD students and has published extensively in his research area. He serves as a reviewer for several journals in pharmacology and toxicology and has attended and presented papers at several local and international conferences. Professor Ansah has been an assessor and external examiner for several PhD theses locally and internationally. He has also been actively involved in the evaluation of papers for academic staff in universities locally and internationally for promotion.
Professor Ansah has twice been Head of Department of Pharmacology and before his appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University.
He has served the university on several committees including the Academic Board. Before his appointment, he was a board member of the School of Graduate Studies and provided additional service to the graduate school as Chairman in the examination of MPhil/PhD candidates. Rev. Professor Charles Ansah has served as Chairman of the Procurement and Public lectures committees of the University. He has been a member of the Health Management Board of the University. As a Dean, he was the Chairman of the Faculty Board and a member of the College of Health Sciences Board.

Professor Ansah served on the Ghana Food & Drug Authority’s Technical Advisory Committee on clinical trials for nearly 10 years. He has been a board member of the Ghana Pharmacy Council, Governing Boards of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and the Centre for Plant Medicine Research at Mampong Akuapem, Ghana. Before his appointment, he was the Chairperson of the Education sub-committee of the Pharmacy Council and an examiner in the Ghana Pharmacy Council Professional Qualifying Examination for pharmacy graduates.
He is a fellow of the West Africa and the Ghana Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.
He is a Consultant/Expert for the West African Health Organization (WAHO) on the safety of medicinal plants and played a key role in the preparation of the West Africa Pharmacopoeia recently published by WAHO. He has also served on several other boards locally and internationally in the area of Pharmacy education and training. He is presently serving as the Chairman of the team of experts working on the second volume of the West Africa Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
Professor Ansah is a Minister of the Gospel of Christ and serves as an Associate Minister of the Christ Congregation, the Presbyterian Church on the University campus. He is a youth counselor and takes keen interest in students’ academic performance and career development.
Rev. Ansah is married to Gertrude, a Pharmacist and they are blessed with four children, two boys and two girls.
