Worcester, Massachusetts – Pledging to work every day to make the American dream a possibility for all people of Massachusetts, Senator Ed Markey tonight accepted the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate. Senator Markey thanked the crowd gathered for the first day of the Massachusetts Democratic Convention at the Worcester DCU Center and focused on the need to stop the Republican and special interest-backed effort to take back the U.S. Senate.

“To all of the activists, the volunteers, the door-knockers, the phone-bankers, and the elected officials here this evening, thank you so much for everything you have done, and everything you will do this year to keep the Bay State blue,” said Senator Markey.

Senator Markey called on the crowd to join him in creating a more compassionate and caring Commonwealth and country. He highlighted his fight in the Senate to raise the minimum wage, address the epidemic of heroin and prescription drug abuse, create jobs in the innovation economy and stop the rising tide of gun violence.

“I take on these big issues because I know these are the fights you would take on if you were in Washington with me,” said Senator Markey. “For democracy to succeed, it needs courageous people. On all the important issues of our time, Massachusetts has always provided those courageous people. Now, we need you to rise up and be the new 21st century defenders of democracy.”

Since being elected to the U.S. Senate last year in a special election to replace now-Secretary of State John Kerry, Senator Markey has introduced legislation to create clean energy jobs, fund gun violence prevention research, protect first responders and innocent bystanders who administer anti-overdose medication, and has secured millions in disaster relief for Massachusetts fishermen.

“Guided by the principles and values of our Democratic party — justice, tolerance, liberty, and equality — let’s work together to create a future that is more fair, more healthy, more prosperous and more peaceful for our Commonwealth, country and the world,” concluded Senator Markey.
