Architecture and Design Scotland will host a seven-month programme of exhibitions, events and activities to get behind the scenes of the environmental legacy of the Commonwealth Games 2014.
The rich schedule of events and exhibitions celebrates and showcases the range of environmental legacy projects being delivered by the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, The Games Organising Committee and partners throughout and beyond the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It demonstrates how these projects contribute to the success of the games and will act as a launch pad for a legacy that will benefit the citizens of Glasgow, the people of Scotland and visitors for years to come.
Building a Legacy – The Athletes’ Village

The Athletes’ Village exhibition shows one of the most visible examples of the legacy
of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. At the heart of the Clyde Gateway urban
programme, this development is the catalyst for regenerating Glasgow’s East End.
The Empire Café…A Welcome Discussion

The Empire Café is an exploration of Scotland’s relationship with the North Atlantic slave trade through coffee, sugar, tea, cotton, music, visual art, academic lectures, poetry, debate, workshops, historical walks, film and literature.
The project forms part of the official Festival 2014 Cultural Programme.

You will get hints, tips and practical advice to enable you to work successfully with lime mortars in high temperatures and with rapid drying effects of both the sun and wind. In fact it’s harder to cool down a building than heat it up!
‘Make it Happen’ Event

The first Resourcing Scotland’s Heritage training events are taking place in July and August.
‘Make it Happen’ is a one-day training course which introduces participants to fundraising for heritage organisations and projects from private sources. The event costs just £20 and travel bursaries are available to enable you to attend.

Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival 2014

Venue: Edinburgh World Heritage office, Bakehouse Close, Edinburgh
Cost: Free
The festival is organised by the Edinburgh Traditional Building Forum, a group representing stakeholders from across the sector from architects and surveyors, to suppliers and craftsmen.
The aim is to celebrate Edinburgh’s traditional buildings and the materials and skills used to maintain them for future generations. The festival is funded by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, the Stone Federation of Great Britain, and the Construction Industry Training Board with support from Edinburgh World Heritage.
The festival events are all free but places are limited, and can be booked via the Edinburgh Festival Fringe box office.
How Barcelona Became a Tourist Destination

Glasgow City Heritage Trust, in collaboration with Architecture and Design Scotland and The Lighthouse, are happy to announce The Commonwealth Lecture Series. Speakers are traveling from various countries to speak at the series, which will primarily focus on placemaking and sustainability. Lectures will cover a wide range of innovative and exciting topics.
In the third talk in the series, Lluis Bosch will speak about “How Barcelona Became a Tourist Destination”. Lluis Bosch is the Head of the Routes and Publications department of the Urban Landscape Institute of Barcelona City Council.
Please note, booking is essential.

Edinburgh Gardens & Squares Conference 2014

Cost: £60 (limited student tickets at £20)
The aim of the conference is to explain the significance of Edinburgh’s historic gardens and squares, to celebrate them and to demonstrate how they can be maximised for the benefit of the social, economic and cultural life of the city in the 21st century.
The first two sessions in the morning with a coffee break will be devoted to setting the scene describing the history, philosophy and development of the spaces within the city. The third session in the afternoon will be about the practical aspects of managing these spaces in the 21st century. A reception in the banking hall of Royal Bank of Scotland, St Andrews Square, will conclude the day.

Energy Efficiency Conference 2014 – A Sustainable Historic Environment for Scotland

RSA Metzstein Discourse 2014 – Álvaro Siza

Álvaro Siza is recognised as one of the world’s most significant contemporary architects. His work stems from and is grounded in his native Portugal yet its poetry and strength speaks to a global audience.
Professor Isi Metzstein OBE RSA was a hugely respected architect and teacher as well as Treasurer of the RSA. Generations of students, both at the Mackintosh School of Architecture where he taught for most of his life and at Edinburgh University where he was Professor and Head of Department, found him an unforgettable inspiration. His collaboration with Andy MacMillan in the Glasgow architectural practice of Gillespie, Kidd and Coia has left a legacy of buildings of exceptional importance.

188th RSA ANNUAL EXHIBITION
“Focus on Film”

The RSA Annual Exhibition is a focal point of the RSA programme and showcases work from RSA Academicians the length and breadth of Scotland. Now in its 188th year, it continues to provide a platform for contemporary paintings, sculpture, film, printmaking, photography and installation alongside work by some of the country’s leading architects.
This year’s convenors, Ronald Forbes RSA and Charles Hussey RSA (Elect) have also curated a themed aspect within this major exhibition entitled ‘Focus on Film’ – a survey of Scottish art involving the moving image. The exhibition will showcase Academicians whose practice currently utilises film, established filmmakers past and present and emerging film artists, some who have come through the RSA New Contemporaries and other RSA programmes. There are nine curatorial themes exploring varied approaches to creativity in filmmaking and including a range of documentary works about RSA Members.
Royal Scottish Academy
Works by recent RSA award winners will be exhibited, including new work by Oliver Mezger, the recipient of the 2013 RSA Morton Award for Lens-based work. Additionally, there will be a small survey of the Morton Award, looking at previous recipients including Alexander & Susan Maris and Paul Rooney. There will be memorial works for Anthony Wheeler PPRSA, John Bellany HRSA and Keith Rand RSA.
Edinburgh Architectural Association AGM

The Edinburgh Architectural Association AGM is being held on Tuesday 13th May 2014, 17.45 for 18.00 at the RIAS, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh, EH1 2BE. All members of the RIAS in the EAA Chapter are invited to attend the AGM.
Crichton Wood RIAS, EAA Honorary Librarian, will also be giving a short talk on ‘Robert Adam and the Strange Death of Scottish Architecture’. The talk is about the language of indigenous Scottish Architecture and to accompany it there will be nibbles and wine.

CPD – Social Capital in the Workplace

As part of Tsunami-Axis’ ongoing programme of workplace related seminars they offer a unique twin topic event taking place on Wednesday 14th May 2014 at their Edinburgh showroom.
Derek Nash is a Partner and Head of Commercial Property at Lindsay’s Solicitors. Derek will host a discussion on managing lease liabilities. Lease commitments are one of the key liabilities of a business. A normal lease contains various opportunities and threats for a tenant. This seminar looks at break options, lease termination and repairs and may assist you in managing some key strategic decisions on you or your client’s property.
The second seminar is titled Social Capital in the Workplace and is hosted by Mark Catchlove of Herman Miller. It focuses on the intangible qualities that turn a group of individuals into a community and highlights some of the benefits this can deliver for commercial organisations.

Rob Davies presents ‘DEVELOPMENT – Edinburgh’s coastal regeneration landscape.
In this photography exhibition, initiated during study on the Masters in Design in Photography course at Glasgow School of Art, Rob set out to explore the changing edge of a city and in doing so found a costal landscape in limbo. One of stalled housing developments, dislocated communities – a land of unfinished visions, uncertain of its future and disconnected from its past. Funded by arts trust scotland.
