Key facts

· Birmingham Dental Hospital is a high quality facility for delivery of specialist NHS dental treatment, and houses the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry – a successful partnership between dental healthcare and education dating back to 1880.

· Approximately 430 Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust staff, 130 University of Birmingham staff and 600 students will be based at the new hospital and school.

· This is the first integrated dental hospital and school built in the UK for almost 40 years.

· The total project cost of the new building is £50 million.

· With 154 dental chairs, the new hospital is equipped to treat over 120,000 patients a year – considerably more than the 645 recorded treatments established in 1858, the year in which Birmingham Dental Dispensary was founded.

· The hospital and school sits within the 610-hectare Calthorpe Estate and forms the latest development in the growing Edgbaston Medical Quarter.

· The site of the new hospital was home to the BBC’s Pebble Mill Studios between 1971 and 2004 and remained unused until construction work began in September 2013.

· The University of Birmingham was the first University in the UK to grant dental degrees.

· The existing Birmingham Dental Hospital was officially opened by Minister of Health The RT. Hon. Kenneth Robinson MP in April 1965.

· Pebble Mill is the seventh home to the dental hospital in Birmingham, which is the oldest in the country.
