Club’s digital manager Twanji Kalula chats to talented local style reporter Trevor Stuurman

Trevor Stuurman’s name has been trending in fashion circles for a little over a year now. Praised for his knack for spotting outstanding street style as well as his refreshing point of view, he has deservingly earned his place as an up-and-coming talent to keep an eye on.

After winning Elle magazine’s Style Reporter competition in 2012 Trevor’s career hit the fast track. He has since worked closely with some of fashion’s leading players, including Elle editor Jackie Burger. “It’s been a true a blessing as they are great pillars of strength and support. They have taught me that you don’t have to be sour to make it in this cut-throat industry. Kindness goes a long way.”

He also has incredible personal style, which is what caught Club MAN’s attention. We asked him to tell us what it takes to catch his lens:

Who always gets it right?

The Sartist. Their timeless tailored style is everything.

What is the secret to achieving impeccable street style on a limited budget?

Invest in accessories such as the trending five-panel cap, hats and backpacks. These are just a few elements that can bring a cool street-style factor to your look without tipping over your bank balance.

Are South African men pushing the boundaries when it comes to street style?

In Johannesburg, yes. The guys there are much more fashion-forward and trend-conscious compared to Cape Town guys, who have a casual, more laid-back approach to fashion.

What items should all men own?

A plain white shirt, classic blue denims and a black tailored jacket. These are all timeless pieces.

Check out Trevor as he takes us through one of his looks in our Frugalista Street Style fashion video.
