UAE: The College of Education at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) , in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, organized its 3rd Master’s of Education Recruitment Forum on Tuesday 25thMarch 2014 at the Jumeirah Hilton Hotel in Dubai. The forum was attended by Khawla Ibrahim Al Mualla, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Policies at the Ministry of Education, Professor Steven Bossert, Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Ali Al Naqbi, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Scientific Research as well as faculty members, education professionals, teachers, supervisors and students.
Khawla Ibrahim Al Mualla stressed that the Ministry of Education places great importance on such informative gatherings of higher education faculty, staff and students, especially when organized by a prestigious university such as the UAEU. She further stressed and praised the partnership between the UAEU and the Ministry of Education which is aimed at developing and improving the performance of teachers and administrators in the education sector.
She added that such forums complement the strategic plan of the Ministry of Education who are focused on the provision of a sustainable and professional educational environment. Through enrollment in such courses as the UAEU’s Master’s and Doctoral programs teachers, mentors and administrative staff can enhance the provision of education throughout the UAE by developing their own professional capabilities. Therefore, these programs play a vital role in encouraging professional development and further specialization among those working in the education sector. She urged educators to enroll in such beneficial programs without delay and to give this significant educational opportunity top priority, whilst recognizing the need to reorganize some aspects of family life and working schedules to accommodate this excellent chance to develop their professional and educational potential.
Dr. Hala El Howeris, Coordinator of the Master’s Programs, gave a presentation outlining the Master’s programs on offer. The College of Education offers three internationally accredited programs which received accreditation in 2005 and again in 2010. These courses are a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction (including Islamic studies, social studies, science, mathematics, English and Arabic); a Master’s in Educational Leadership and a Master’s in Special Education. These programs are delivered to international quality standards and to meet the requirements of the UAE’s unique educational context. The College of Education seeks to produce graduates who not only have advanced pedagogic capabilities, but can also conduct research in order to pinpoint future developments and trends in the field of education and to implement these innovations.
Dr. El Howeris discussed the admission requirements for these programs. Students are required to have a Bachelor of Education Degree, or equivalent, from a university accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE. Graduates of other disciplines, without a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, must have a cumulative GPA average of at least 3 (out of 4), or equivalent, in their undergraduate degree and achieve a band 6 in the IELTS exam; 79 (from a possible 80) on the TOEFL iBT exam or get 550 in the TOFEL PBT exam. Additionally they would require three letters of academic recommendation.
Students must take 36 credit hours of classes where the language of instruction is English. There are also Arabic language courses and there is a choice of writing the final thesis in Arabic or English.
The event offered the attendees an opportunity to take part in an open discussion and to ask any questions they might have had. It was also possible to enroll on the spot and thus register for a Master’s degree with the University on the same day.
