Sharjah, UAE: Students from the Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) have been given the opportunity to explore and develop their future career paths at a major careers fair hosted at the school.

More than 215 students from grades nine to 12 and their parents met with the UAE’s leading universities and colleges where they were given the chance to explore higher education opportunities based upon individual needs and interests.

Universities provided the students with direction and advice on everything from specific undergraduate courses and admission requirements to information on university campuses and facilities, as well as extracurricular activities offered.

Dr. Roderick Crouch, VISS Principal, said: "The choice of a career can be complicated and overwhelming for the students."

"At VISS, we want to ensure a smooth process at such an important stage of our students’ lives, and for that we have a dedicated careers guidance counsellor to assist students and their families in determining the best university and to provide the insider knowledge needed to help our students make the right decision for their future. The school offers two pathways to university entrance, the IB Diploma Program and the Global Citizens Diploma, and guides the students in to the best program to maximise their opportunities."

The careers fair, which included the participation of 19 higher education institutions, was organised as part of the school’s careers education offering. Careers education and guidance is incorporated into the curriculum to meet the school’s aims of supporting students beyond their time at the school. The school provides one-on-one guidance and advice as well as workshops all year long to inspire students on their future and potential career paths.

"The careers fair was yet another testament of VISS providing continuous support for our students, something that we are very proud of," said Sajid Hussain, Head of Business, Enterprise and Careers Education at VISS.

"This event gave our senior school students and their parents a platform to obtain advice, receive direction and make informed decisions from over 20 leading universities from across the UAE."

IB Diploma student Zeina Farhat added: "It was a fantastic opportunity to consult and receive useful information that in turn will help me make better decisions. It was great to know that the IB Diploma prepares me so well and gives me an advantage. "

Yasmin Kojak, a Global Citizens Diploma student, added: "I consider myself very fortunate to be in a school that cares for my future beyond my time at VISS. To have all these universities come to us rather than have to chase them is just awesome!"

The fair also offered guidance and information for parents to support them in helping their children decide their next steps.

"This was a really good experience for students and very useful in helping determine the options available for our children in the UAE," said Asma El Hanash, whose daughters are in grade 9 and 10 at VISS. "I really appreciate the effort to provide a fair like this. This indicates that the school cares about the students and helps prepare them for their future after school."

Universities and Colleges included the American University of Dubai (AUD), Paris Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, Heriot Watt University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), American University of the Emirates, Amity University, Canadian University of Dubai (CUD), Emirates Aviation College, Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi, Murdoch University, University of Wollongong, American University of Sharjah (AUS), Inner Universe, International Horizons College, Middlesex University, Oxford Aviation Academy, Education Zone, and Airways Aviation Flight Training Academy.
