WRITING:  Using Queen Elizabeth’s and King Henry’s speeches, please complete the following writing assignment.

Prompt:  You are a soldier who has served in the armies of both Queen Elizabeth and King Henry V.  Write a letter to a friend or loved one in which you explain why one ruler has inspired you more than the other in your career as a soldier.  Why is one ruler’s speech, for example, before a major battle more motivational and stirring than the other’s.  Please mention specifics and short quotes from the speeches in your letter, including how each speech employs ethos, logos, and pathos differently (even if you don’t use those exact terms).  Obviously, you will write in first-person.  Be creative and persuasive in your letter.  1 1/2 pages in length TYPED (Times New Roman, 12 pt., dbl. spaced, 1″ margins).  *Due at the start of class.

READING & ANNOTATING:  Please read Martin Luther King’s Noble Peace Prize acceptance speech and annotate for his uses of the rhetorical strategies of ethos, logos, and pathos.  In your annotations, please make short comments about why each rhetorical strategy is effective and persuasive.  Please note, too, any uses of imagery or metaphor that you find especially powerful.

Absent from class?  Here’s what you missed:

English:  Discussed answers to “beauty” AP quiz; took “Yellowstone” quiz—students took quiz individually and then discussed their answers before posting to Juno; discussed annotations of Elizabeth and Henry speeches.  *AP quiz make-up:  I will be offering make-ups of the “Yellowstone” quiz on Wednesday @ 9:30 or 3:35 (unfortunately, I have a meeting that morning so will be unable to offer make-ups prior to 9:30).

Forensics:  Continued debate speeches; completed “anecdote” activity—please come by to get your two words for the activity.
