EMSI’s latest quarterly data release (2014.3 beta) is now available to Analyst clients, and it’s a significant one. The new release includes new industry codes (based on NAICS 2012) and many updated data sources.
Updated Data Sources in This Release
Current Employment Statistics, up to June 2014 (BLS). This dataset helps us form an estimate of 2013 annual job averages ahead of final, detailed figures from QCEW.
Quarterly Census of Employment & Wages, Q4 2013 (BLS). This is the most complete source for wage and salary industry employment data.
Occupational Employment Statistics, 2013 (BLS). This is a key source for determining staffing patterns and local jobs and earnings by occupation.
Local Area Personal Income, 2001-2012 (BEA). After being reduced by the federal budget sequester, LAPI was reinstated and released in May 2014. LAPI informs our estimates of self-employed and extended proprietors at the county level.
County and Zip Code Business Patterns (Census). These datasets help us estimate missing data in QCEW and create zip code level estimates.
Nonemployer Statistics (Census). This source helps us estimate self-employment at detailed industry and geographic levels.
LEHD Quarterly Workforce Indicators, data as of June 2014 (Census). LEHD QWI allows us to create jobs data by county, industry, age, and gender.
SAM / Input-Output Modeling Data (BEA). We have updated several sources from the BEA: NIPA tables, Gross State Product, Make and Use Tables (revised 2007 – 2012).
Methodology Changes
NAICS 2012 Based Industry Codes. EMSI now uses NAICS 2012 based industry codes for all years of data. This requires reconstructing historical data, which is released in previous versions of NAICS, with estimates in the new classification system. For a complete list of changes, see below.
Improvements to Occupational Wage Estimates. Occupational wage estimates for interstate MSAs has been improved. Previously, in some situations the various in-state parts of one interstate MSA could have very different wage estimates for a single occupation. These are now much closer to each other.
Other Important Notices
QCEW Classification Shifts in 2013 Q1
Starting in 2013 Q1, the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages began reclassifying establishments that were formerly coded in NAICS 525 (Funds, Trusts, and Other Financial Vehicles) and 814 (Private Households). Most of the employment that was under 525 is now coded under 5239 (Other Financial Investment Activities) and 551 (Management of Companies and Enterprises). More than 60% of the employment formerly in 814 is now coded under 62412 (Services for the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities). In EMSI data, these “breaks” are apparent starting in 2013 annual averages. Historical data will not be reclassified unless it is done in the original QCEW source. (Source link)
Local Area Personal Income Restored
Recent federal budget cuts (the “sequester”) had resulted in major cuts to BEA’s LAPI program. However, those changes were reversed in May 2014 and LAPI was re-released. EMSI now uses the updated data.
Summary of NAICS 2007-2012 Changes
Most of the changes are actually simplifications, in which two or more NAICS 2007 codes become a single NAICS 2012 code. The percentages in the table below represent approximate national job percentages of the NAICS 2007 code that have moved into the given NAICS 2012 code.
