ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced its DC-powered Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) midspans won the “The Renewable Energy Design Award” in the Exceptional Technical Innovation category at the Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards 2014. The Elektra Awards are run by Electronics Weekly, and are considered among the most prestigious and recognized awards in the industry.

Microsemi’s PoE midspans substantially improve the cost and efficiency of deployment of small cells and other DC powered deployments, as utilizing energy from solar panels or in telecom locations often requires this type of power and voltage. Microsemi’s DC-powered solutions eliminate customer needs to use AC or an external DC to AC power converter with AC midspans, and with the midspans plug-and-play installation, the devices are easily and cost effectively implemented—thus leveraging an existing Ethernet infrastructure while at the same time providing the assurance of a future proof network.

The judges commented that this product was highly effective in solving a practical problem which can be experienced with solar power installations.  In addition to solar powered applications, Microsemi’s devices provide cost-efficient standalone solutions for powering small cells, WLAN access points, IP videophones, thin clients, security camera, and other high power applications in DC environments along with traditional telecom environments. According to ARCchart, approximately 5 million small cells will ship annually by 2017.

“We are honored our DC PoE midspans were recognized at the Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards 2014. Our unique portfolio of outdoor DC powered midspans makes it easier and more cost effective for cellular, Wi-Fi access and IP surveillance anywhere under the sun,” said Sani Ronen, director of marketing for PoE systems at Microsemi. “As a pioneer in PoE since 1999, our systems fulfill today’s need for DC powered devices which utilize energy from solar panels or in telecom locations which often require this type of voltage level.”

About Microsemi’s PoE Solutions
Microsemi’s DC-powered PoE midspans, PD-90XXG and PD-95XXG series, are cost-effective standalone solutions ideal for powering small cells, WLAN access points, security cameras, IP videophones, thin clients and other high power applications in DC environments such as solar-powered and traditional telecom environments in both indoor and outdoor installations.

The energy-efficient midspans can be powered by DC ranging from 10- to 60-volt and provide standard PoE power to applications requiring 15.4, 30 and 60 watts of power. The PD-9XXXG series is designed for indoor use and the PD-9XXXGO has been developed for outdoor installations. Both devices feature a convenient plug-and-play installation and provide significant energy efficiency and cost savings. In addition, the devices’ DC input versions eliminate the need to double convert power, offering an eco-friendly and more efficient way to power devices without the need to convert AC to DC.

The 95XX series also offers energy efficient PoE by providing PoE over all four-pairs of the Ethernet cable, this functionality reduced the current by 50 percent and as a result saves 50 percent of the power lost on the cables compared to other PoE solutions (switch or midspan).
