From ancient sciences to celebrity-hyped, Australian spas, retreats and holistic getaways are offering the latest skin treatments that cater to any preference and skin condition.

THE TREATMENT: Diamond Flower Peel

Eco-friendly organic salon, Meticulous Beauty in Melbourne’s Prahran, offers the Diamond Flower Peel, a natural alternative to microdermabrasion. Where traditional crystals are sharper and exfoliate using a cutting method, the Diamond Flower Peel polishes and exfoliates with organic grains.

“It’s less disruptive to the epidermis and offers an alternative microdermabrasion treatment for all skin types,” says spa owner Gina Collins. “It’s less aggressive and provides opportunity for more frequent treatments, providing increased collagen stimulation, blood circulation, oxygenation and cleansing lymphatic flow.”

HOW IT WORKS: Dermabrasion is a tried and trusted treatment that has been adapted and modernised with the Diamond Flower Peel system. It delivers a controlled stream of pure organic flower grains to the skin to slough off dead cells, leaving the skin smooth and fresh. A second peel with serum infusion is performed to rehydrate and treat, while promoting new skin and collagen growth.

GREAT FOR: Ageing and sun-damaged skin, acne and acne scars, pigmentation, stretch marks, fine lines, enlarged clogged pore, skin and body rejuvenation.

MUST KNOW: Chemical-free, no artificial ingredients, no harsh salts.

THE TREATMENT: Ayruvedic Aromatherapy

Australia’s only Eco Tourism certified retreat, Gwinganna, in Tallebudgera Valley, Queensland, is well known for offering luxurious holistic treatments that have clients coming back for thirds. Their latest offering is being touted as “a marriage of two sciences.”

Ayurveda— an ancient holistic healing system designed for vibrancy and optimal health—and Subtle Energies aromatherapy come together for a foot and leg massage or a whole body indulgence. Either of the two Ayruvedic Aromatherapy treatments can be enhanced with an extra 30-minute chakra cleanse and balance, which uses the Subtle Energies oils to anoint specific charkas with affirmations designed to help the healing process.

GREAT FOR: Relaxation, clarity, lymphatic drainage, rebalancing, detoxification and stress relief.

MUST KNOW: All Subtle Energies oil blends are free from nasties, including preservatives.

THE TREATMENT: Salt Therapy / Halo Therapy

From sniffles to eczema, salt therapy is one of the newest complementary therapies said to help give relief to sufferers of some of the most common skin and respiratory ailments. As the name suggests, salt is the hero ingredient.

Offered by Salts of the Earth centres in Victoria and Western Australia, it is a non-invasive, chemical-free therapy designed to relieve congestion, inflammation and allergies that affect the airways and skin. By widening the airways of the respiratory tract, the micro salt particles reach deep into the respiratory system loosening up the mucus, which helps to reduce inflammation. Simply sit back, breathe and relax in ambient rooms designed to mimic a natural salt cave. During the 45-minute session, a Halogenerator grinds pharmaceutical grade salt into tiny particles that become airborne and dispersed. David and Katharine Lindsay founded Salts of the Earth in 2010 after they saw effects salt therapy had on David’s father, a long term sufferer of chronic respiratory illnesses. “My father tried so many forms of medication and underwent numerous unsuccessful surgeries in an attempt to clear his airways. He tried salt therapy as a last resort after it was recommended to him and it played a significant role in improving his health, even making his medication more effective,” David says.

MUST KNOW: Salt therapy is not a cure and works in conjunction with the sufferer’s medical treatment, helping to relieve symptoms.

THE TREATMENT: LI’TYA Susu Dew

Aborigines have long understood and practiced techniques that work in harmony with Mother Nature and her laws, so it is only natural that, as we awaken, we return to treatments that nurture the whole self.

Gwandalan Day Spa on Orpheous Isalnd on The Great Barrier Reef consulted with the region’s indigenous people to develop the treatment that translates to “sea spray”. A rhythmic body massage, LI’TYA Susu Dew is inspired by traditional

Aboriginal techniques to balance and realign energy flow, while enhancing mind and body wellness. Pressure points are massaged with spiraling movements to ground and uplift, while relieving muscular aches and pains.

MUST KNOW: Keeping to Aboriginal teachings, the spa’s therapists have been extensively trained in the wisdom of the indigenous people and educated in the use of Australian native ingredients.

THE TREATMENT: Vampire Facial

Made famous by reality sister Kim Kardashian, the Vapire Facial—or Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy—has made its way into the mainstream.

Said to help minimise fine lines and encourage collagen production, the treatment involves drawing out the patient’s own blood, which is then treated in a centrifuge. This spins the blood at high speed to separate the lighter plasma, which is then activated with calcium chloride to begin releasing growth factors that, once injected into the facial skin, is said to increase collagen production and fosters healing. Performed at Advanced Dermatology in Sydney’s Bondi Junction, advocates say it works wonders for creating youthful, plump and firm skin.

MUST KNOW: As with any cosmetic dermatologic treatment, a thorough consultation with an experienced physician who can answer all of your questions is a good idea.
