Tablet and smartphones of the future will be powered by solar energy. This is the vision of Apple and Samsung have begun to assess the feasibility of small solar panels integrated into their gadgets. These long-term plans, because the technology is still needed in the early stages of study, but in a few years users will not have to worry about charging the phone before leaving.

The cells that the two companies intend to use are based on a technology different from that of common photovoltaic panels. The research concern in particular organic cells that can be “smeared” on a thin film and placed under the screen of the devices.

Several technologies have been developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and from U.S. companies (and Solarmer Plextronics), English (Konarka) and Japan (Mitsubishi Chemical). The biggest problem to be solved is the low efficiency in converting sunlight into electricity. Using the polyethylene terephthalate (PET), companies have been able so far to obtain an efficiency of between 5 and 8%.

Samsung has already released four products with small solar panels mounted on the back of the frame, three telephones (Blue Earth, Solar and Replenish Crest) and netbooks NC215S . Instead Apple has no product on the market, but his interest for solar cells is confirmed by four patents filed between 2006 and 2009.
