From Boxing Day to Boxing Week

First mentioned in a Samuel Pepys diary, circa 1663, Boxing Day was intended to occur the day after Christmas when royals and aristocratic British families presented boxes of clothing and leftover food to their servants, along with the additional benefit of a duty-free, non-working day.

In modern times, Boxing Day is regarded as “Second Christmas Day” with retailers offering huge discount deals, with some advertising sales beginning Christmas Day or before. According to Matthew Cheng, eCoupons.ca founder, sales now begin as early as the weekend before Christmas. Cheng estimates that at least 100 retailers are offering special deals online for Cyber Boxing Day. Included on the retailer list are Best Buy, with sales commencing at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve and Amazon.ca, where discount deals begin the weekend prior to Christmas.

From Ontario to British Columbia, the U.S., big box chain store, Target is celebrating its first Boxing Day in Canada. To get the best possible bargain, Cheng strongly urges shoppers who visit brick and mortar establishments to present eCoupons at the checkout counter.

According to a Vancouver Sun newspaper reporter, the winner of the Jump Start Boxing Day for 2013 is Walmart where online deals began at noon on Christmas Eve.
