Jumping in the middle of an information-driven world is probably a bad idea for a new company, unless you make use of the right set of tools. When you are driven to grow your business, it is important to take advised steps in order to achieve success. One of the most sought after advice is to have a firm control over the business activities with an eye on details. And when we talk about business world, treading carefully is a must when it comes to control and management.

Incorporating Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is what businesses seek to. ERP systems ensure a detailed scan of the entire business activity within one software module. But choosing the right module becomes more of a decision for the business.

There are two types of reliable ERP software:

Closed Source ERP

Open Source ERP

First of all, to save the trouble, the major difference between the two is, Open Source software is open to developers and can be customized according to the creative bends of the software developer. On the other hand, Closed Source software doesn’t allow this privilege and strictly sticks to what the company wants its software to be – untouched.

Comparatively, it is arguably accepted that most closed source ERP systems are mature than their counterparts. We can deduce that because in most cases, closed source ERP software have better functionality and fewer loopholes to cover than the ones that are open sourced. These modules are designed by expert professionals who understand what their consumers expect from it and follow company ethics, to pass it on the software.

Another important factor that leads us to believe that closed source is better is because of the sheer lack of skilled and experienced professionals in Small-Medium-Enterprises (SME) to develop Open Source ERP. Also, there is no concrete evidence as such that open source systems are widely incorporated in larger companies. It is crucial to realize that Open Source connoisseurs market open source software as something that finds its strength in user companies. They consistently imply that user’s ability to modify and develop an open source ERP, creates a greater impact.

There is no doubt that open source systems have greater potential to look forward to in the market. But it is also important to be considerate about what majority of companies prefer when it comes to making key business decisions. Businesses don’t think twice if they adapt their mind to the notion that a closed source ERP system is more reliable than an open source ERP. Only because a certain product allows greater flexibility doesn’t always mean that the product is more reliable than the benchmarked variants. To avoid assumptions, we are implying that a closed source ERP sets the benchmark.
