Simply put, PLR is a right that you obtain, usually by paying for it, to use a piece of content and sell it for 100% of the profit.
PLR stands for “Private Label Rights.” Many online marketers consider PLR to be their ultimate secret weapon in creating content fast and at minimum cost.
PLR comes with rights (permissions) to use the product yourself freely and sell it for 100% of the profit. Most people think of PLR as eBooks, but these same rights can be granted for any product, but they are mostly digital products, such as eBooks, reports, articles, software, audio and video. They may come with sales letters, e-Covers, matching website headers… basically everything you need to set up a website and sell the product yourself.
When you buy a piece of content with PLR generally you can…
* Add, remove and rewrite the content.
* Use the content in a different form, such as change it from text to audio.
* Use the content for other purposes. For example, you could take an eBook and recreate it as an e-Course.
* Claim authorship. I suggest you make enough changes so that it really reflects you, but you aren’t required to do even that.
* Sell any or all of it and keep all of the profits.
That’s just in general. You must check the license that comes with any PLR product you obtain. Some PLR providers will let you give it away, like as a bonus for a paid product, while others will only allow you to sell it. Sometimes you can even claim the copyright for the product straight out of the package, but others may only allow this only if you have changed the content enough so that it appears to be a new product.
The most important thing is to read your rights before making the purchase. Make sure that it meets your needs and purposes. If the ad doesn’t list off the rights, don’t buy it!
Here’s an example from one of my sites. I’ve put information from the sales page and the actual rights that come with the package side-by-side below. Notice that the sales page tells you exactly what you get and all the rights that come with it. If after you purchase the product, you find that the rights are different, I suggest that immediately get your money back.

It mentions two other types of rights, Resale (or Resell) Rights and Master Resale (or Resell) Rights. Once again, the rights vary by product so always read the license, but generally it goes this way. (Note that the terms “Resale” and Resell” are often used interchangeably.)

The big plus with all of them is that you keep all the money from any sales. PLR is the only one, however, that gives you the right to modify the content and claim authorship.
But if you find a product that you really like just the way it is and only want to sell it, try to pick up Master Resale Rights at the same time. That way you can sell it for one price to people that only want the product, and for a higher price for those looking to do the same thing that you are. This will cost you a bit more up front, but you make it back many times over in the long run.
Regardless of the rights you choose to purchase, remember to Read the License. They do vary, so you really need to know this up-front.
One thing you want to make sure of is that you get great quality PLR. There is a lot of PLR not worth your effort. Stick with known names of quality PLR creators and you are unlikely to go wrong with your investments.
