IUCN and the Slovakian Presidency of the Council of the EU are on Monday the 7th of November hosting the event entitled “Outcomes of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 – what do they mean for Europe?”. Our planet is at a crossroads – the decisions we make today will set us down a path that will define humanity’s opportunities and the boundaries of those opportunities for generations to come. To discuss and agree on the way forward, over 10,000 leaders from government, civil society, indigenous communities, faith and spiritual traditions, the private sector, and academia gathered at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 in Hawai’i, from the 1st to the 10th of September, 2016.
How can the EU benefit from this momentum to examine nature -based, life -affirming solutions and the roles of governments, civil society and the private sector in the development and delivery of the outcomes of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016?

The main goal of this event in Brussels is to inform IUCN Members, partners and EU decision makers, and Members of the European Parliament about the key outcomes of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 and to discuss how they can support environmental policy and action in Europe. Resolutions from this Congress such as those on “IUCN Biodiversity Offsets Policy”; “Defining Nature-based Solutions”, “Reinforcement of the principle of no-regression”; or “Natural Capital” can be of support for current relevant EU debates. This event is also an opportunity to indicate how these outcomes feed into the upcoming Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties in Cancún, Mexico, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs) and the EU Biodiversity Strategy.
