Traditions, traditions, traditions, I can’t say it enough, my favorite part about the holidays are the traditions. From reading stories, to baking cookies, to doing advent calendars, and creating neighbor gifts, teacher gifts, and more, the traditions are what bring our family together during a chaotic season.
One of my favorite holiday traditions, regardless of the holiday is reading stories, and then making a treat that goes along with the stories. You may remember this from our Halloween series from last year.
To me the holidays are a magical time where kids get to believe in things like Santa Claus, and flying reindeer. And anytime I can read a story or play a game with them, or do something to help keep that magic alive and real for them I do it.
I was recently at Walmart and saw their darling Hallmark Northpole toys and gift collection near the front of the store. You can learn a little more about that collection with this video.
Anyway, I stopped to look at the collection, and saw the “Snowball the Polar Bear Plush and Book Combo” and knew my kids would just love it. They are obsessed with stuffed animals, and love books.
So I bought it, and the “Bake like an Elf baking tools with recipe cards,” and planned a fun night for my kids. I decided to combine some of our favorite traditions into one. We would bake, like elves, some “snowball” cookies, and then read all about Snowball the Polar Bear, and enjoy our treats as a family! I love a good theme!
You might be asking what a “Snowball” cookie is, so let me tell you they are also known as Mexican Wedding Cookies, or Nut Butter Cookies. They are basically cookies made with pecans, and rolled into powdered sugar so they look like snowballs. They are one of my favorites, and went perfectly with the Hallmark Northpole toys.
Plus they are really easy to make with kids, which is always a plus. No eggs to crack, and plenty hands on fun!
My original plan was to package these cookies up, and have the kids help me take them to the neighbors. But we ate too many, and I had a cookie exchange I was heading out to (and did not have enough cookies left), so I think we will use the recipe cards from the Bake Like an Elf set to make a few different kinds of cookies over the next few weeks to deliver to the neighbors. I will let you know how it goes! I really love when my kids can be involved in the making of neighbor gifts because it makes the giving more meaningful and teachable. And with the cute set that has elf shoes and bells, etc. as measuring equipment, they are happy to help!

Serves: 24
Ingredients
1 cup softened butter
1¼ cup powdered sugar (Divided ¾ c and ½ cup)
1 cup pecans (ground up)
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
Instructions
Cream together butter, ¾ cup powdered sugar and vanilla in a stand mixer
Grind up the pecans into a fine mixture. *I used my food processor, but a blender would work well too.
Add flour into butter mixture ½ a cup at a time, when all mixed, then mix in ground pecans
Roll into balls
Bake at 350 for 14 minutes
Remove from oven, let cool 1-2 minutes, then roll in remain ½ cup powdered sugar

There you have it, one of my favorite holiday traditions! Are you surprised it involves food? Haha…didn’t think so! But I totally recommend it, as it is a fun activity to get the whole family involved in the holiday spirit, establishing traditions, and making the perfect neighbor gift!
I gave these darling toys to my kids as part of our countdown to Christmas tradition, but I think they would also make great Hostess gifts, office party gifts and are perfect for teachers and charities. Especially because the collection offers so much. So now I gotta know, what are your favorite holiday gift giving traditions?
