My seemingly never-ending places-to-eat list has been reduced by one: I finally got to go to Kepos Street Kitchen!

Grey Goddess Tea ($4.50)

There were a nice range of teas available, but I couldn’t go past the Grey Goddess tea: a mix of bergamot and vanilla with white tea (which I’m told is “an adventurous alternative to earl grey”).

It is such a soothing sort of tea – definitely a nice change to the usual Earl Grey.

Spicy Chickpea and Lamb Shank Stew ($18)

The spicy chickpea and lamb shank stew came with a soft boiled egg and toast and was doused with preserved lemon oil. S had this dish before and liked it so much he ordered it again.

The stew was so full of flavour and surprisingly not as spicy as I expected (so quite tame for everyone else); the lamb was exquisitely tender.

Smoked Salmon Salad ($19)

I ordered the wood fired smoked salmon salad, which compromised of olives, kipflers, soft boiled egg, and dukkah (which I discovered is an Egyptian side dish of herbs, spices, and hazelnut).

This salad was almost too gorgeous to eat, almost! And it tasted even better than it looked – there was just so much flavour and contrasting texture with each mouthful, like the woody saltiness of the salmon, creaminess of the egg, and crunchiness of the toasted hazelnuts. So fantastic!

Kepos Benedict ($19)

R had the Kepos Benedict: smoked salmon, green tahini, poached eggs, steamed leek, and milk bread. The slices of milk bread seemed disproportionately large, but it was so wonderfully light and fluffy that its size kind of made sense.

Mmm gooey egg shot

R thought the green tahini sauce made the dish – it was light and refreshing, bringing a brightness to the dish.

Baked Goods

I’m such a sucker for baked goods… I somehow convinced S and R, despite how full they were, to share something sweet – though we did compromise to only get one item.

So R and I picked an orange tea cake ($5), which was also fantastic. It had the perfect amount of zest, balancing the richness of the cream.

Kepos Street Kitchen is lovely place to catch up with friends over brunch. It can get rather busy, so best to come a little early.

As we were on the cusp of the end of breakfast and beginning of lunch, we were given two menus, but was told we could only order from one or the other – not both, which makes sense (if a little disappointing). Guess we just have to come back for lunch! Hehe.
