Today I’m sharing ten of my favourite ideas for making fun and easy healthy Halloween food for kids.  Halloween can be quite a difficult time of year if you’re trying to eat healthily, especially if you have children.  Here in the UK Halloween seems to be becoming more and more of a big deal, with trick or treating and Halloween parties becoming ever more popular.  Though I admit I used to be a bit of a Scrooge about Halloween, since having children I’ve really grown to love this time of year – it’s all just so much fun! However, it does seem to bring with it a whole host of sugar filled sweets and treats leading to something of a sugar overload.  With this in mind, I’ve put together a list of easy ways that we can make Halloween food extra fun without all the sugar – it’s easier than you might think!

First up is spiderweb soup! What could be healthier than a lovely bowl of vegetable filled homemade soup, and it’s so easy to make it spooky by decorating it with an edible spider web. You can use any soup of your choice for this, just drizzle on a spiral of natural yoghurt and use a cocktail stick to draw lines through it from the centre.  You can find step by step photos of the process as well as three other fun Halloween soup ideas over on my original blog post here: Four Spooky Soup Ideas for Halloween.

On the theme of spiders, this spooky spider snack was a hit with Small Child last year and he’s been making similar ones for himself this year too.  It’s great for a fun activity and snack at home and it would make a fun edible craft activity for the kids at a Halloween party.  If you like this snack idea you might also like my healthy spooky spider energy balls recipe too – great for lunch boxes and Halloween party food alike!

Who wouldn’t want a nice bowl of eyeball spaghetti for tea?! Get gruesome with healthy family meals by adding some mozarella eyeballs, dotted with edible marker pens or seeds. You might also like some delicious mud and worms for dessert – head over to my original blog post to see how tasty mud and worms can really be!

Anyone for a skull egg?! I absolutely love my egg moulds, they come in a variety of different shapes but this fun skull egg mould is one of my favourites for the Halloween season.  You can see my instructions for using egg moulds for more details about how they work, they really are so easy to use and make some really impressive fun food! The bat from the CuteZCute Animal Palz kit is also a great egg shape for this time of year – check out this Halloween bento blog post to see it in use in one of my Halloween lunches.

Every year I pop a pair of vampire teeth into a bagel to make the easiest Halloween bento lunch ever and it’s always a massive hit with my boys – it’s amazing how such a little thing can create instant fun and smiles! You could make a platter of bitey bagels for a party instead of sandwiches (so easy!), and it works for donuts too! You can find full details of the fun bento lunch below here: Halloween Bagel Bento Lunch.

As you’ll know if you’ve visited the Eats Amazing blog before, I often share the fun and healthy bento lunches that I make for Small Child. Throughout October most of his lunches are Halloween themed, much to his delight, but my job of creating a month’s worth of fun Halloween lunches is made a lot easier by using cupcake rings and picks to decorate them.  They’re so great for making simple meals fun, whether they be in a lunch box or on a plate, and of course they’re perfect for decorating cakes and cupcakes too! I decorated the lunch below (which is packed in our Yumbox bento box) with monster robot cupcake rings, an eyeball cupcake ring and a ghost cocktail stick.

I’m a great believer that it’s all in the name.  Call a bowl of healthy pea and broccoli soup ‘Swamp Soup’ and the kids are much more likely to eat it! The same goes for dips like guacamole (swamp slime anyone?!) and the yummy green smoothies shown below – my boys have requested these several times since I first served them up as swamp monster smoothies a few weeks ago. Around Halloween spaghetti bolognese usually becomes ‘mud and worms’ and yoghurt covered raisins ‘ghost bogies’ in our house – with a bit of imagination almost anything can be transformed with a fun name!

Turn an old favourite into a Halloween themed treat with these fun ‘Gingerdead man’ cutters  – they’re perfect for making spooky sandwiches as well as biscuits or cookies.  The imprint sheet leaves a spooky skeleton outline on the bread which you can accent with edible marker pens too. Of course you can also use them make some scrummy homemade gingerdead men too, perfect for a treat and for Halloween party food!

Another really easy fun Halloween food idea is to turn a clementine or mandarin orange into a pumpkin. Draw faces on the peel with a pen (the peel will be discarded so it won’t get on the food) and top them with little leaf bento picks for an instant healthy Halloween snack! (The snack  shown below was packed in our Goodbyn snacks container, available in a range of colours from the Eats Amazing Shop). Clementine pumpkins are always a big hit with my boys and I make them all October long to pop in lunch boxes or snack boxes!

Last but not least, a really simple way of decorating food to make it fun is to add eyes! I have a few different easy tricks up my sleeve to do this – with the eyeball cupcake rings I mentioned above, or one of my favourite bento tools, the googly eye bento picks, with candy eyeballs, icing eyes or with one of my favourite tricks – mini marshmallow eyes! These are so easy to make and perfect for adding eyes to healthy food like apples, plums or grapes! You can see full details and a video tutorial for these fun eyes plus my easy icing eyes tutorial here: Easy Homemade Edible Eyes.
