Happy Roald Dahl Day! We celebrate Roald Dahl Day every year with a fun book themed lunch, but this year was extra special, as it’s 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl, who is one of my all time favourite childrens authors. My son’s school were celebrating in style with a dress up day today, and after some fantastic suggestions from my lovely readers over on my Facebook page last week, he decided that he wanted to dress up as a Wonka bar!

Not one to shy away from a challenge, we spent Saturday creating his Roald Dahl inspired costume, along with my amazing cousin whose offer of a helping hand was very gratefully received. Between us I think we managed to pull it off, he was so excited to go to school in his costume this morning! Be sure to scroll further down this post to see the costume and how we made it, but first I’ve got the matching lunch to share.

Our Roald Dahl lunch had a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme to match the costume, of course. As I’d overslept a little this morning, I kept it simple.  I packed a golden ticket sandwich (ham sandwich on seeded bread, topped with a piece of tortilla wrap decorated with edible marker pen. I wrote ‘Golden Ticket’ on top, it didn’t come out too well in the photo but looked better in the ‘flesh’. On the side I packed sugar snap peas, oompa loompa carrots (raw carrot pieces topped with little people bento picks, and grape ‘sweets’ – more on those in my next blog post! I finished the lunch off with raisins, a few little Haribo sweets and a mini candy cane for a treat. This lunch was packed in our Yumbox Panino bento box.

Back to the costume – it was surprisingly easy to make.  We did have to reshape the box as it was originally a large square one, my cousin did that bit, I’m not quite sure how she managed it but it came out the perfect size! Once we had the perfect sized box, we started by cutting a hole for the head in the top of it. We then covered the box using a roll of craft paper as we thought it would be easier to paint (we’d used a lot of tape when reshaping the box), but you could skip that step if wanted.  We then sketched out the design – wiggly line all round for the edge of the packaging and ‘Wonka Bar’ on the front panel, and got painting!

Both of my boys loved getting stuck in with the painting, we painted the front and back black, leaving the text plain, the sides red, and the top brown, for the chocolate. The boys were fascinated to learn that we needed to mix red and green to get brown, and I had to stop the littlest eating it as it did look like melted chocolate! Once dry enough, we filled in the text with some silver glitter paint for extra sparkle then left it all to dry overnight.  The next day we attached the gold ticket (made from sparkly gold card and a sharpie) with glue and more tape, then used glue to stick tinfoil all around on the join between ‘packet’ and ‘chocolate’, covering up the edge of the golden ticket too.

He absolutely loved his costume and had a fantastic day at school wearing it, I’m not sure what we’re going to do with it now Roald Dahl day is over though, he’s very attached to his giant Wonka bar!

Did you celebrate Roald Dahl Day this year? I’d love to hear what you did, do comment below to let me know!
