Keeping a healthy routine when you’re on holidays (especially over Christmas) can be difficult! Suddenly your wholesome pantry and fridge has been filled with biscuits, cake, coffee and ice-cream to entertain the hoards. The daily exercise routine has changed as there’s no work to attend and despite having more hours in the day, you never seem to have quite enough time to fit a workout in (how does this work?!). Sleep routines are gone as your evenings are filled with dinner parties so roaring with laughter you never want them to end.
These are the joys of Christmas and I wouldn’t change them for the world because some of the most enjoyable memories are made during this time. I would however like to manage myself better so that I don’t end up feeling like a bloated, sick, anxious slob for a couple of weeks. On our recent trip to Cronulla, I tried to find this balance between holiday fun and health. It worked well, so I thought I would share my tips on how to keep a healthy routine on holidays. To celebrate Christmas, I’m also giving away an activewear outfit from LaSculpte, valued at $95.98.
1. Get outdoors – plan your destination
Choose a holiday destination that will entice you to get outside. Being outdoors usually means incidental exercise and it’s far more enjoyable for planned exercise too. For me, nothing beats the beach in Summer time. I can swim in the ocean, walk along the soft sand or even hit the sand hills for sprints if I’m feeling super energetic. If you have a winter Christmas, why not hit the slopes and go skiing?
Staying home over the holidays? Plan a few day trips to places that allow you to explore and/or enjoy the outdoors whilst getting active – hikes, beach, parks, rock climbing, volleyball, tennis, cricket, swimming in a lake, bushwalking, etc.
2. Plan to Keep an Exercise Routine
Discipline and commitment are key to ensuring you fit your exercise in when you’re on holidays. If you usually exercise in the mornings I would recommend keeping this trend. It also gets it out of the way at the start of the day, before your brain works out what it’s doing! If you like a sleep in, you’ll have to be extra committed to a later workout and make it the same time each day. Just because you keep the routine time slot though, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your new location or extra time. Modify your movement to suit your environment. For example, if you have a beach – do an ocean swim, or if you have the bush, go for a trail run.
3. Know your body weight exercises
Body weight exercises can be done anywhere with very little space. I enjoy using fitness apps like Apptiv and Nike Fit Training Club or programs like Voome – they plan the workout for you and you can listen to music as you do it. You could also print out some of my workout printables (you will be emailed these when you subscribe here) and modify the home workouts to suit your environment (email me if you’re not sure how!).
4. Be okay when it doesn’t go to plan – but don’t give up
Some days, you’ll not keep the routine. You’ll over eat or not exercise. BE OKAY WITH THIS – BUT DO NOT THROW THE TOWEL IN! You are on holidays, these things are likely to happen and it’s ok! It’s expected. Enjoy that moment and then get back to your plan when you realise you’re off track. Small set backs won’t cost you much, it’s when you start to get negative and repeat those actions that it really impacts your health.
5. Get some activewear that you feel good in
You want to wear the kind of active wear that you’re comfortable grabbing a coffee in later or going shopping in beforehand. My LaSculpte outfit is my go to for this. It was gifted to me and I love it.
Tights
Since giving birth and not running much I’ve preferred to wear tights over shorts. I was a little worried about what I would do in summer because it might be too hot, however I’ve found these tights to be a great lightweight pant for summer workouts. The best part is they break the norm of lightweight tights = VPL (visible panty line). These are comfortable, modest, cool, flattering AND pretty!
Running top
The top is a beautiful soft lightweight fabric that’s moisture wicking, quick dry & breathable. It doesn’t crush so it’s great for those coffee dates after. I found it’s quite flattering too. After giving birth and having my boobs grow a few sizes, I found tops that are lose are now more flattering for me.
Waterproof jacket
The waterproof jacket was perfect for those windy afternoons on the beach or going to and from my workout. How cool are the tailored slit back? You can see it better here. Keeps you cool and dry!
