I have to admit, I haven’t always loved using whole chickens for our meals. It was much simpler to buy the boneless, skinless chicken breasts when there were only 2 of us, or 3 of us, or even 4 of us. But now that there are 6 of us- all of us with healthy appetites- buying pre-cut chicken can get pretty expensive! I’ve been buying a whole chicken almost every week while grocery shopping the last few months and I LOVE it!
I stick the chicken in a crockpot with spices, let it cook all night, then we can have up to 3 meals with one $5 chicken! It’s a great way to cook it. A chicken cooked in a crock pot smells delicious, while a chicken boiling on the stove smells awful to me! Why is that?!?!
I’m going to show you how we get every last bit out of the chicken. Virtually nothing goes to waste (except the innards, just can’t do it! But they do make a tasty snack for our dog!) and my kids love just about everything I make with it.
I’ll spend a couple of days showing you each step I take so I don’t overwhelm you with information- but don’t worry, it doesn’t actually take days to do everything!
First of all, spread whatever spices you want all under the skin of the chicken. You can remove the skin if you want, but it stays much more moist with it on! You can always remove it after cooking.
See? The chicken is literally falling off the bone!
Here’s a generic spice mix I use some of the time. That way, you can use the chicken in several different types of recipes.

Whole Chicken in a Crockpot

Use this generic spice mix to season your chicken to use in many different recipes!
Ingredients
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. onion powder
Instructions
Cook the chicken with your choice of spices in the crock pot on low for 6-8 hours.
