The month of April is full to the brim celebrating films throughout the south. Kicking off this weekend (April 10 – 19), The Florida Film Festival (Orlando, FL) will be screening the Sundance Best of NEXT Audience Award winner, Imperial Dreams, the critically-acclaimed documentary, Cartel Land, as well as the opening night feature, Welcome to Me, starring Kristen Wiig.

During the same week, The Sarasota Film Festival also boasts a healthy slew of noteworthy ‘must see’s’ featuring the Richard Gere led, Time Out Of Mind, by director Oren Moverman and Heaven Knows What by brothers Ben and Joshua Safdie.

From April 16 – 25, the party will be moving up to my neck of the woods. The Nashville Film Festival, one of the oldest film festivals in the United States, will be hosting screenings for a variety of films including Erin Derham’s feature documentary debut, Buskin Blues, In My Father’s House directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Dundberg, and the Croation narrative feature, Eadweard, by director Kyle Rideout. Winston-Salem’s RiverRun International Film Festival also coincides during the same week, promising to deliver inspired independent films during its 17th annual event.

HOMELESS, the debut narrative feature film by husband and wife team, Clay and Tif Hassler makes its premiere at each of the featured festivals, and it’s quickly becoming a critical and soon-to-be fan favorite. HOMELESS tells the story of a teenage boy lost in the bleak and helpless routine of life in a shelter after the passing of his grandmother. This stubbornly independent film was shot in North Carolina and made for a mere $12,000 with all non-actors in a real homeless shelter with real homeless people. The 93 min. film was touted by the programmers at Florida Film Festival saying — “With its haunting score, gritty look, and fine performances, HOMELESS never feels contrived and is American neorealism at its best.”
