Most of us are all familiar with the seven wonders of the world. While there are many variations on list, both ancient and modern, they all hold something very unique and special. The original seven include “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon” and “The Great Pyramid of Giza.”
There are many other wonders, both natural and man-made, throughout the world that are in danger of disappearing. These iconic places are in danger due to natural environmental activity and man. Here are 10 amazing places you must see while they are still alive.
1. Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands are located 600 miles of the west coast of Ecuador, the country to which they belong. It is composed of 18 main islands and 3 minor islands. Nearly 9,000 species call the islands and their surrounding waters home. Over 75% of the reptiles and land birds are endemic (native to the Galapagos Islands).
2. The Maldives
This island nation in the Indian Ocean consists of 26 double chain atolls (1,192 coral islands). This is the world’s lowest nation with most of the territory just above three feet sea level.
3. Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system. It consists of over 900 islands and 2,900 individual reefs. The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is the only living thing on earth visible from space.
4. Venice
Venice is located in northeastern Italy and sits on a group of 118 small islands. These islands are separated by canals and linked by bridges. An average of 50K tourists visit the historic center a day, with most enjoying Venice’s world renowned Gondola rides.
5. The Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is the world’s saltiest body of water and makes swimming similar to floating. This body of water is 10 times more salty than the ocean. The Dead Sea borders Jordan to east and Israel to the west.
6. The Alps
The famed Alps are located in Europe and stretch over 750 miles (1,200 Kilometres) across eight countries. Mont Blanc stands across the French-Italian border, and is the highest mountain in the Alps at 15,782 feet.
7. Madagascar
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. More than 80% of Madagascar’s flora and fauna are found nowhere else on the planet. The Republic of Madagascar is located in the India Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa.
8. The Congo Basin
The Congo Basin is the world’s second largest rainforest just behind the Amazon. The basin extends across seven African nations, and the rainforest produce 40% of the world oxygen.
9. Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park is located in Columbia Falls, Montana. The park spans one million acres, with 200 waterfalls , 712 lakes, and 27 glaciers.
10. Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is a marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Construction on the Taj Mahal, regarded as the best example of Mughal architecture, started in 1632 and was completed in 1653.
