GEHC CELEBRATES NATURE’S NOCTURNAL HAPPENINGS AT THE ANNUAL CREATURES OF THE NIGHT FESTIVAL OCT. 18
As the leaves begin to fall and the crisp, cool air of autumn takes its hold on Georgia, the woods of the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center (GEHC) come alive at night. Come experience the wonders of nocturnal animals and their amazing adaptations at the Creatures of the Night Festival on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. The event starts at 6pm and ends at 9pm.
Meet real, live examples of night time creatures that might inhabit your own backyard, including an owl and an opossum. The event will also feature an indoor scavenger hunt, crafts, owl pellet dissections, Discovery Dome shows, a night sky presentation, a full moon tram ride and an enchanted display of nature themed, carved pumpkins. Throughout the evening, the GEHC will offer night hikes for both younger and older visitors where participants will use all of their senses to explore what goes bump in the night.
The GEHC will also host a “green” pumpkin carving contest as a part of the festival to see how creative guests can be in carving their fall pumpkins with a “green” or nature theme. Entries for the contest must be delivered to the GEHC before the event on Oct. 18.
“We are encouraging guests to use their imagination to come up with a green or nature themed carving for their jack-o-lanterns. Their creations will be displayed and judged by staff and visitors at the enchanted pumpkin display during the Creatures of the Night Festival,” said Jason West, director of programming.
Program fees for the Creatures of the Night Festival are $5.00 for ages 13 and up and $3.00 for ages three to 12. Children two and under and GEHC members are free. Program fees can be paid at the door, or you can register and pay online at www.gwinnettEHC.org.

THE HUDGENS CELEBRATES FUSION OF ART AND CULTURE AT OCT. 26TH EVENT
DULUTH ― The Hudgens Center for the Arts, the region’s premier cultural arts center, hosts its inaugural fundraiser on October 26, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Debuting as “The Hudgens Party,” this extraordinary event features live music, dancing, and salsa lessons by such distinguished artists Tino Garrido and dance ensembles: Salsa Belles, Ballet Folklorico Danceando, the Gwinnett Ballet and The Royal Dance Academy. There will be an open bar with signature cocktails, Latin-inspired fare, a silent auction featuring one of a kind opportunities, as well as a special silent auction item created live by nationally renowned artist Kathy Fincher.
Hosted in the Fowler Gallery, Kistner Atrium, and Sculpture Garden, the dramatic backdrop for this event is the Hudgens’ current exhibit: Hispanoamericanos ― Traveling Souls. Based on Felix Berroa’s Hispanic-American Visual Artist Project, the exhibit features the brilliant work of artists in a wide variety of media, whose inspiration and influence springs from their native lands of Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and other Latin American countries.
The Hudgens pARTy Silent Auction offers opportunities to bid on unique experiences including an island vacation in the South Pacific, a dinner party catered by award-winning chef Massimo Mariano, a private box for a Gwinnett Braves or Gladiators game, and more.
Tickets for the gala event are $75 per person for members; $100 for non-members. Festive cocktail attire is encouraged. Winder theater group announces Oct. 30th performance
The Winder-Barrow Community Theatre has announced the cast of the final show of the 2013 Main Stage Season. The “Battle of Shallowford” by Ed Simpson takes place during the evening of October 30, 1938 at Mock’s General Store in Shallowford, N.C. As the night progresses, a group of colorful locals arrive at the store. The rest of the world is on the brink of war, but these folks are only interested in local gossip until they turn on the radio and learn that the Martians have invaded! It is the night of Orson Welles’ history “War of the Worlds” radio drama! They fall hook, line and sinker for the broadcast and run out to do battle. The play is a hilarious comedy but does have some adult content.
Show dates are October 25 – 27 and November 1-3. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 pm, and the Sunday matinees are at 3 pm. Tickets can be purchased now at both ticket locations.
