College of the Rockies’ Fernie Campus is offering a new program that is perfect for those adventurous at heart. Rocky Mountain Educational Adventures gives participants the opportunity to challenge themselves and to learn new skills with experienced, certified guides. With three options throughout the year, there is sure to be something for every type of adventurer.
In the fall, alpine adventurers can learn the skills needed to feel safe and comfortable in the mountains through various day hikes as well as a five-day wilderness travel hike through the Canadian Rockies. Perfect for the first-timer or anyone wanting to brush up their skills in order to feel more comfortable hiking in the mountains, Alpine Adventures covers everything from route planning to wildlife awareness and rock climbing.
During the winter months, the beauty and challenges of the Kootenay Rockies will be explored through Backcountry Skiing Adventures during several one-day ski tours and two five-day trips. Skiers will leave the groomed trails and safely enjoy the splendor of the backcountry. Basics of ski touring, hazard recognition, terrain analysis and powder skiing techniques are some of the areas participants will explore.
Come spring, those who prefer their adventures on water can discover the lakes and rivers of the Kootenay Rockies by canoe, raft and whitewater kayak. Whitewater Adventures includes fifteen days on the water as part of a team learning river rescue, paddling, first aid and camping skills. Suitable for even those with no previous paddling experience, this program promises an action-packed water adventure.
Fernie Campus Manager Anita Palmer says, “This program was designed for those who aren’t able to commit to a full-time program but want to improve their skills with the guidance of our experienced, certified guides. What better place to unleash your inner adventurer than in the stunning Rocky Mountains?”
