Park Nights is an annual series of music, theatre, performances, talks and film screenings staged on Friday nights in the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 designed by Sou Fujimoto.
This summer, Park Nights features a conversation between psychoanalyst Adam Phillips and Director of the New York Public Library’s Public Programmes, Paul Holdengräber; performances by multidisciplinary artists Russell Haswell and Yasunao Tone in an evening curated by Haswell; a site-specific performance by artist George Henry Longly; and a screening of film works by Leslie Thornton accompanied by a conversation with artist James Richards.

Have you ever spent time imagining the ‘other life’ you could have lived? For this Park Night, psychoanalyst Adam Phillips, author of Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life and Paul Holdengräber, Director of LIVE from the NYPL at The New York Public Library, discuss the frustrations of growing up. Our deep belief in our unfulfilled potential is so profoundly rooted in childhood that, as Phillips considers in Missing Out, it comes to play a substantial role in our experience of life. Phillips proposes that our acceptance of this might itself be the key to leading a more satisfying life.
This Park Night continues the conversation between Adam Phillips and Paul Holdengräber that began in New York earlier this year. In the intimate context of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013, the audience has the unique chance to become a part of this ongoing dialogue.
Russell Haswell and Yasunao Tone
Friday 6 September, 8pm
Multidisciplinary artist Russell Haswell curates and performs an evening of sound with pioneering noise musician Yasunao Tone. Responding to the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013, the performance explores the structure through its resonances and reverberations.
George Henry Longly, GHL
Friday 20 September, 8pm
Artist George Henry Longly works across several media to explore issues in architecture, composition and design. For this Park Night, Longly creates a specially commissioned performance reflecting on the concept and structure of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013. Titled GHL, Longly’s performance borrows from the structure of a fashion show.
Leslie Thornton and James Richards

This Park Night invites artist Leslie Thornton to screen several of her acclaimed film works, in a programme specifically created for the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013. The evening includes the UK première of her new film work, Luna. Following the screening, Thornton will be in conversation with artist James Richards, whose practice includes video, curation and exhibition design.
