2014-06-04

Last year I started the Best Reads of the Week series to help publicize some of my favorite blogs and to help the community as a whole connect with the best content coming out of the blog-o-sphere. As I was working my way through these blogs, and trying to discover new ones, I found it increasingly frustrating. At the time there weren’t any easy options available for finding great blogs about tabletop gaming. Instead you had to either stumble upon a gaming blog when you played roulette with the random blog search or you had to find someone who had linked a bunch of blogs and read through their list.

For me this was an incredibly dissatisfying way to go about finding gaming blogs. So I went through my blog roll call and started linking each of them, describing what they were about, and providing a snapshot of their current updating schedule. On December 5, 2013 I published the Great Blog Roll Call and opened up the list so that I could add anyone who wanted to join. Since that time I’ve added nearly 148 blog to the original 130 and have continued to add even more for this year’s edition of the Great Blog Roll Call.

This year I’ve changed a few things on the list. I’ve reorganized it to make it easier than ever before to find new blogs, and I’ve added a graveyard for the blogs that were on last year’s list that have been deleted or declared dead by their owners. I’ve expanded and changed many of the descriptions to reflect the current focus of these blogs, and I've changed all updates frequencies to match the blog out puts at this point in the year.

As always, please feel free to link to this list or re-share it because the goal here is to get more people reading these blogs and to see less of them going dark, being abandoned, and being deleted. If you’ve got a blog that you’d like to add to this year’s list please feel free to either e-mail me or leave a comment below!

Otherwise, on with the lists!

Blogging Graveyard

d20 Dark Ages: The archives are still active on this great blog that ended on May 5, 2014. Lots worth mining here.

Aldeboran: There is nothing left but a goodbye for this once great blog.

Here Be Dragons: This blog is completely gone with nothing but a "This website is gone" message.

Huge Ruined Pile: Nothing remains of this blog but the memories.

Joe the Lawyer's Wondrous Musings: I'm shocked to report that this long running blog is gone completely.

The Strange Afterworld: Gone and replaced with an advertisement to buy junk cars.

Notes on RPGs: This blog has been deleted and it's archives are lost entirely.

Of the 278 blogs on last year's list seven blogs ended. All of these blogs were long term blogs that had active readerships and of the group only d20 Dark Ages moved on because the author was ready to start a new project.

Numerical Blogs

2 Warps to Neptune: A nostalgic blog that looks back with a fondness for the products and early days of the hobby. An excellent read for anyone who got into the hobby later in life as you’ll find out more about what you missed as a consumer and get to read about the author’s love for all things nerdy from the early days of the hobby.

A

About Bruce Heard and New Stories: This fascinating blog by former TSR author Bruce Heard began as a way for Heard to further expand the world of Mystara for himself and fans of the setting. Since the successful Kickstarter for his World of Calidar setting the blog has moved away from new Mystara content and has instead focused exclusively on his new project. Updates: About three times per month.

Abraxas: While this sadly abandoned blog hasn't been updated in over two years that doesn't prevent it from having some interesting content. You'll find some cool artwork, interesting monsters, and choice bits of narrative to mine for your own games. Updates: Sadly abandoned.

Acorn Afloat, the: This amazing little blog is a reader's dream come true. The author will provide you with fantastic little creatures and spells for your game and then follow it up with some spectacular little setting that will leave you wondering how you can drop it into your game. Then you'll have poetry and the author's own distinctive art filling the pages; and before you've realized it you've spent seven hours on the blog digging through the archives. Well worth reading. Updates: About once a month.

Adventures in Gaming v2: A creative blog that seeks to not only encourage the reader to expand their own creative horizons but to purchase the author's products. Lots of interesting, free content in this blog. Really worth checking out. Updates: About twice a month.

Aeons & Augauries: An expansive blog that tends to find substance in subjects others have abandoned or neglected. It's filled with creative ideas, new ways to examine standard themes, and free content that you'll find it difficult to pass up. Smartly written and always engaging; one of my favorite blogs. Updates: About 15 times a month.

Aeternal Realm of Sylvaeon: A sadly neglected blog from a creative author that has a unique understanding of the hobby and how we should play. There's a lot in the archives of this blog worth exploring as author has wide and varied tastes. Updates: Dark since February 1, 2013

Age of Ravens: If you're looking for a blog with an astute and cunning eye that can distill some of the most nebulous aspects of the hobby down into a palatable form then look no further. Whether the author is discussing the history of Superhero Roleplaying Games or whatever else might capture their interest you're in for a treat. My only complaint is that it does not update enough for my ravenous appetite. Updates: About eleven times a month.

Aiee! Run from Kevin's Brainsplurge!: One of the oldest blogs on this list (begun July 10, 2003). There is so much content on this blog that cover all of it in this short of a span is practically impossible. This incredibly inventive blog has covered the breadth of the hobby and continues to find interesting topics to cover today. I also really enjoy the author's artwork that pops up from time to time. Updates: About five times a month.

Akratic Wizardry: An interesting blog that focuses mostly on OSR style games and their literary roots. Smartly written and filled with lots of interesting house rules that can be imported into your Swords and Wizardry game. Updates: About five times a month.

Alexandrian, the: This long running blog (started July 4, 2005) continues to produce engaging content on a regular basis. The author places no limits on what they talk about which results in a blog that is always interesting. One of my favorite things about reading this blog is that you never know what you're going to find, but it's always worth reading. Updates: About three times a month.

Altdorf Correspondent, the: One of the best Warhammer blogs I've run across. The author focuses on the topic to the exclusion of most any other with the end result being a great glimpse into one of my favorite game worlds. I wish it updated more often. Updates: Three times this year.

American Barbarica: A proto-weird blog that centers its activities on creating wild events in the tradition of the weird fantasies found in pulp magazines. The archives can reveal a treasure trove of goodies if you're willing to mine for them. Updates: Essentially a dead blog that no longer updates due to the author creating the blog GIANT EVIL WIZARD.

Anamnesis of the Mystic Scholar: An old school blog written by an incredibly thoughtful author who will push against your notions of what should and should not happen with regularity. Always worth reading. Updates: Dark since April 19, 2014.

Ancient Vaults and Eldritch Secrets, An Old School Gaming Blog: This OSR blog is filled with so much goodness that you can disappear into it for days and come out with more great ideas then you ever imagined possible. If you told me that the author was a mad scientist cranking out an army of monstrous warriors I would believe you. Fantastic read. Updates: Dark since January 9, 2014.

And the Sky is Full of Dust: This blog is a wild ride. From encounters designed for the Adventurer Conqueror King System, to free adventures to run your players through, to these fantastic session write-ups that remind me more of a boxing match than a role-playing game. A fantastic read with an easy to navigate webpage. Really enjoying this blog! Updates: Nine times a month and all of them great reads.

Angry DM, the: A humorous blog that packs more in each entry than most people would even imagine was possible. You can expect every post to be filled with jokes and well thought out advice. Fantastic blog! Updates: Once per month.

anyway.: This fascinating blog is brought to you by the same mind who wrote Dogs in the Vineyard and Apocalypse World. Like many independent publishers this blog tends to focus on the author's experiences as a publisher, but that shouldn't scare you away as there's lots of content that spans the entirety of the hobby. Unlike so many blog archives (my own included) this blog divides its posts by topic with the end result being an incredibly easy to explore archive. Be sure to check it out! Updates: Twelve posts a month.

Appendix M: All monsters, all the time. This blog has put a lot of effort into creating some glorious new monsters for your home game. Wonderful art to go along with each new creation. Mine these archives and enjoy the hard work of an inventive blog. Updates: Twice this year.

Archive of the Rotted Moon: A creative blog by Goodman Games author Micheal Curtis. Currently focusing on Metamorphosis Alpha content (because it's awesome). Lots of wonderful stuff in the archives about all sorts of old school goodness. Updates: Dark since February 6, 2014.

Arden Est: I'm really kind of digging this responsive blog. The author tends to use their experiences in game to address the problems their encountering, and we're all better for it. Great items, some fantastic narratives, and a clever mind cutting through to the heart of every problem. Updates: About six times a month.

Armchair Gamer: This blog is insightful and clever, often exploring the author's nostalgia. Updates: Eight times a month.

Bat in the Attic: An intelligently written blog that tends to vacillate between a designer's blog and a massive resource for OSR style games. Always worth reading and the archives are filled with good ideas and sources of inspiration. Updates: Six times a month.

Beat Ronin, the: I really like this blog. The author is smart and often keeps his entries down to small, bite-sized portions that crawl about your brain pushing back against your notions about how things are done. Digging my way through the archives right now and hoping to find new entries coming down the pipeline soon. Updates: Four posts per month.

Beholder Pie: The author of this blog was the winner of this year's One Page Dungeon Contest and there's little wonder why. Lots of good art, smart writing, and insightful thoughts on their published adventures in Dungeon Magazine. Really worth reading. Updates: Twice a month.

Black Gate, Adventures in Fantasy Literature: While not strictly a gaming blog this site features a slew of writers, including Grognardia's James Maliszewski, who focus on topic related to the hobby. Really a great site to explore. Updates: Hard to say, but multiple posts per day by various authors. Lots to read.

C

Campaign Mastery: A blog dedicated to helping Dungeon Masters achieve a greater level of success in all facets of their game. Deep archives and some great contributors are major bonuses for this blog. Updates: Nine times a month.

The author is smart, has a wide and varied scope of interests, and you'll find yourself enjoying most every entry. Well worth the read. Updates: 25 post per month.

City of Iron: There are blogs that you come across that make you wish you were better at everything you do, and this OSR blog is one of them. Neat setting, but the adventures and quotes from the campaign keep me coming back to this blog. Love is the word you're looking for. Updates: About six times a month.

Well worth reading and I look forward to when the author is able to pick it back up. Updates: Sixteen post per month.

E

Eaten by Ducks: This blog collects weird art by weird artists from all over the place and is a great source of inspiration for all your role-playing games (especially you flailsnails kids). Updates: Fifteen times a month.

Echoes from the Geek Cave: An OSR blog that's a lot of fun to mine for useful ideas in your own campaigns. The author has an enjoyable writing style and a good sense of humor, both bonuses in my view. Updates: Dark since April 23, 2014.

Edgar's Game Blog: This blog features some amazing content. Not only will you find the author's ever expanding campaign world but you'll find Zappa cropping up at the best times possible (as though there were ever a bad time to enjoy Zappa). The author's thoughts on elves and the planet Ore are just amazing. Can't wait to see the setting further expanded. Updates: Seven times a month.

Elfmaids & Octopi: At a time when many blogs will be rehashing the same topic over and over again this blog continues to plod along putting out the author's own vision for what an amazing game of Dungeons and Dragons should be like. Smart, creative and filled with fantastic content. Look out for the exceptional d100 charts that will come up from time to time as they're always worth reading and adding into your DM's Notebook. Updates: 27 times a month.

EN World: A great place to start finding out what's happening in the hobby today. While the author doesn't often go in depth on the articles he links to, he does make an effort to find the information that many of us would be in the dark without. Great place to start your reading experience as he continues to break important news stories in the hobby on a regular basis. Updates: Often three times a week, though on occasion the number will rise.

Esoteric Order of Role-Players, the: This blog, from the same author that brought you the RPG Corner, is a treat. Unlike so many other blogs on here this one is almost exclusively devoted to live play sessions of the Pendragon RPG. The GMs involved do a good job and the players are really a lot of fun to listen to. Glad I found this blog, and I'm glad that I've found a fun group to listen to. Updates: Five posts a month.

Everwayan, the: This blog will do things to you that you aren't expecting. One moment you're exploring Mesoamerican history and the next you're crying for the author's loss. When I first started reading this blog I though it couldn't get better, but as I've made my way through the archives I can tell you it does. Read this blog and be better for it. Updates: Dark since March 2, 2014.

Exonauts!: Most often a space role-playing game centric blog that touches some fantastic places that few other blogs dare to explore. You're going to find something inspiring most every time it updates. Updates: Nine times a month.

Expanding Universe: This OSR blog makes up for its low number of posts with the depth of the author's ideas and creativity. Lots of things to mine in the archives that will pay off your efforts in spades. Updates: Twice a month.

Eye of Joyful Sitting Amongst Friends, the: An engaging Tekmuel blog that has some fantastic resources for the setting. The author has some great ideas and he's really a cool guy. Well worth reading. Updates: Eight times a month.

F

False Machine: This blog is one of the best written and most creative blogs on the list. The author has an engaging and quick writing style that makes even the longest post a quick and enjoyable read. I can not say enough good things about this fantastic blog. Add it to your blog roll and read one of the best blogs out there today. Updates: Twenty times a month.

Fantasy Heartbreaker by Rose Bailey: A rarely updated blog that tends to tread deep waters as the author is always looking at things from a different perspective - which only makes me wish it was updated more often. The archives aren't very deep, but the subjects covered are almost always interesting and enjoyable. Updates: Darl since April 24, 2014.

Fantasy Ink: A great inspirational blog filled with artwork from the Golden Age of illustration. Really a great place to explore when you're looking for some visual inspiration for your next session or gaming post. Updates: Dark since March 18, 2014.

Fate SF: I've never played with the FATE system, but this extraordinary blog makes me want to. The author is very persuasive and if you give them half a chance you'll be rolling dice with pluses and minuses on them and happily roving the stars. I was just introduced to this blog, and I will not be missing an entry. Updates: Nineteen post a month.
