On this day in 2001, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” opened in movie theaters everywhere, bringing J.K. Rowling’s magical world to life.
Since then, the franchise has become a Hollywood staple, spanning seven books, eight movies, a theme park, a spinoff, a play and millions of dollars worth of merchandise.

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE – Based on the first of J.K. Rowling’s popular children’s novels about Harry Potter, the live action family adventure film, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” tells the story of a boy who learns on his 11th birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. Invited to attend Howarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. At Hogwarts, he finds the home and family he has never had. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” airs on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29 (8:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. The 11-year-old spent 10 years as The Boy Who Lived until the series ended in 2011.
After he left Hogwarts, Radcliffe, 26, has appeared in “The Woman in Black,” “Kill Your Darlings,” “What If,” and “Trainwreck.”
Radcliffe also went to Broadway, performing in “Equus” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
He’s due to appear in “Victor Frankenstein” and “Now You See Me 2” in the coming months.

Everyone’s favorite magical redhead had only acted in school plays and his local theater group before playing Ron Weasley.
Since the end of the franchise, Grint, 27, hasn’t seen as much success as his co-stars, but he’s acted in the punk-rock drama “CBGB,” and the failed TV show “Super Clyde.”
Grint also spent four months on Broadway in “It’s Only a Play,” will star in “Moonwalkers” next year and just signed on for an NBC pilot.

The prettiest nerd at Hogwarts, Emma Watson, 25, has stayed busy since Harry Potter ended.
She’s starred in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “The Bling Ring” and “Noah” and will appear as Belle in the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017.
Off screen, Watson was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador last July.
Oh, and she also made time to earn a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in May 2014.

Since her valiant defense of the castle during the Battle of Hogwarts, Smith has spent most of her time playing the Dowager Countess on “Downtown Abbey.”

Recently, Gambon’s appeared in HBO’s “Luck,” “The Casual Vacancy” and “Paddington.”
He’ll be back in theaters next year in “Metanoia” and “Dad’s Army.”
