Five years of growing bigger each year has meant that more and more local artists want to take part in the Gallery’s popular X-mas Bazaar.

‘This year we have more stalls than we’ve ever had, up from less than thirty to thirty eight,’ says Judy Mewburn, the enthusiastic organiser of this annual event. ‘In order to have more floor space we decided to move the Bazaar from the Gallery to St. Barnabas Parish Hall in the heart of Dulwich Village. Another benefit of the move is that we can be open for business more than double the time as the Gallery was only available to us in the evening.’

The Bazaar is taking place on Saturday 16 November and opens at 10 am and does not close its doors until 5pm. It will have stalls that attract the interest of everyone looking for unusual X-mas gifts. They are all local artists and artisans, ‘ Judy points out and also mentions that this year two charities will be present, Southwark Arts Forum and Dulwich Helpline.

When asked what will be for sale, Judy rattles off jewellery from several artists, knitted accessories and handmade bags. There will be a couple of potters showing their wares and there is cashmere and fine alpaca clothing, silk scarves and   hand-drawn cards. ‘Let’s just say that we cover the whole spectrum of gifts, and especially those kind of gifts you won’t see in the high street.’

The Gallery will be there offering memberships for sale with attractive gift cards, a present that will give pleasure the whole year. There will also be attractive gifts to suit all pockets for the X-mas stockings.

Judy is also organising the catering, ‘I want something that will please the whole family, simple but delicious sandwiches, organics cakes of which some are gluten-free and freshly made coffee and tea.’

The Dulwich Picture Gallery X-mas Bazaar has always been popular with the locals and even attracts buyers and sellers from further afield. ‘ Busy people appreciate that they can get most of their X-mas shopping done in one place, get unusual gifts and then sit down for a relaxing cup of tea  while  avoiding the crush and queues of the West End.’
